Any clue what a 1957 black les paul custom pickup is worth? It's in good condition.

On eBay, it looks like it would sell between $1900 and $2500 if a re-issue. You never know what the market will yield. Get a few appraisals.

Originaltexan, I really appreciate your advice but I've heard more like 25-40K from other sources. Again, I don't know too much about it which is why I'm asking the Aggie network. If anyone has helpful advice on where to look for hints, please tell. Not sure I'll ever sell but wanted to learn a little more about it.

Holy smokes. Beautiful guitar, no idea what it's worth. 25-40k is a lot of money. Sounds like you have a great guitar.

Is it an original 1957? If so looks like it could be worth serious dough.

It is. Wow. Wish I had inherited it from an *******. Would be easy to sell. Thanks Garland.

The million dollar question...how did you acquire it? That will make an interesting story.

Save it and give it to your kids someday.

echoing GarlandAg here.

First thing I would do is get a few appraisals and then get it insured. I say a few because the first place I took my 1964 Gibson EB0 bass told me "the economy is bad right now sooooooooo $7-800?". Online they are anywhere from $1200 - $5000.

Not really an interesting story. Actually kind of scary for what could have happened. My great-grandfather who I was very close to left it to me along with a Mason & Hamlin grand piano (it's over 100 years old and I'm paying out the ass to have it stored until I can afford to fix it up). So, I always knew the piano was worth a lot, but never the guitar. I've had it hanging on my wall as a decoration for 8 years, and someone recently came over and told me I was an idiot and to get it insured.

If I didn't respect my great-grandfather so much, I would sell the guitar to finance the 25K needed to fix up piano and sell.

If the guitar appraises for what's mentioned above, there's no reason you couldn't take out a loan with it as collateral to fund the piano refurbishment. Think of it as a really high end pawn arrangement.

Do you know if the guitar is all stock or has been modified in any way? Stock tuners, bridge etc? or if it has ever been refinished? Stuff like that lowers the appraised value a lot.
If it is all bone stock and in good condition, then its a collector. Keep it away from small children!

OMG!!!! Wow, that is incredible! Good lord man, by all means, insurance, yesterday.

And also, keep that thing in a well humidified room to keep neck from drying and warping. Oil the neck from time to time as well, and loosen the string tension a bit. Not all the way, just a bit.

That is a huge piece of music history you have there!!!

No modifications. In fact, it hasn't really been played much at all. He bought it thinking he would learn to play, but didn't end up playing much. Has been in that old ugly ass case for 60 years. If I get time soon, I'll pull out the amp and take a picture too. Vacuum tubes and weighs a billion pounds. Wouldn't mind selling that thing if it's worth anything.

So take it out of the case? Should I hang it with one of those guitar mounts? No clue on my end on how to treat it! Thanks for the advice!

PLEASE post pics of the amp!

You can keep the guitar in the case, but as I said, the humidity is important. Anywhere from 30-50% humidity is great. Honestly, with something that valuable it's worth it to check that kind of thing. Guitars also don't like changes in humidity, so try and keep it fairly constant.

In terms of storage, I would probably keep it in the case so as not to sustain further light damage. Light, over time, damages finishes on wood. Also, do NOT keep the guitar case laying on its back (e.g. under a bed), either stand it up straight as if the guitar was sitting on a stand, or leave the case on its side with the handle facing up.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions I can, I'm not an expert but am fairly knowledgeable.

The amp is probably worth a little money itself. Hell, even the case could be worth something depending on everything.

From a buddy of mine who is really into buying and selling vintage audio/music gear:

quote:
thats pretty cool, it does happen, I dunno what the book says, you might get $30k in a private sell, but closer to $20k in good condition
I wonder what the amp is, if its a 1957 bassman, add another $10,000

****! I'll gladly part with the amp. I'll get some pics tonight and post tomorrow. It's the original amp. Thanks.

Just called an appraiser and he said something like "you might want to go get a cup of coffee or something because you're not going to want to see me take it apart, but I have to in order to make sure it's legit". Sounds scary, but I also understand. For any of you guitar folks, does this seem normal? Thanks.

Just make sure it's a VERY qualified appraiser that is specifically knowledgeable re: vintage guitars. Taking it apart is not that big of deal, unless you're dealing with someone who doesn't know how to handle the instrument properly.

Can't wait to see the amp! Or wait, maybe I can since I won't be able to afford it...

Just realized that the second picture posted is from the amp. It's a 1958 "Vibrolux" (by Fender I believe). Pics tonight or tomorrow. Thanks Echo for advice. Taking it to guy tomorrow that sounds very knowledgeable. I drilled him on taking it apart and he said it was no big deal and he's done it for guitars from the 1700's, and he's been doing this for 37 years. I just won't watch!

I would definitely watch to monitor what is being done to your property.

I would demand it, if there is any resistance to watching.

Good luck.

Agree 100% w/ agz win, you want to be 100% sure that all parts are replaced with care. It won't be traumatic, guitars are relatively simple and there isn't much to "take apart" per se, I'm sure he just wants to look at the pickups, knobs, wiring, etc. and make sure they're original.
