I've enjoyed greatly the colorful reflections on Bill Hobbs and also the discussion on Ed Simonini.
Anyone have any similar observations on Mike Little? He was quite the character....I know there have to be some good stories out there.
Like Simonini, he was from Las Vegas. Though undersized by standards even back then, he flat tore stuff up. The first image that comes to mind when I think of him was in the 1980 Texas game. A Horn RB took a swing pass in the right flat...Little had locked him in from the get go and had a full running start. About the time the RB caught the pass, Little was all over him...he didn't knock him down but instead drove him back about 15 yards at full speed...upright...until the whistle blew. That play was to me the defacto illustration of how things went down in Austin that day. We were the little guy...the underdog...but we were tearing helmets off as soon as we stepped off the bus.
I remember Little being interviewed at Kyle by Channel 13 in Houston. He pointed up to the new suites that had just been built and said "That's where I'll be in a few years" and then started making faces with his tongue hanging out as if he was halfway through a bottle of Crown.
Unlike me, the ride seemed more important to him than the destination. Now sometimes I wonder if I should have tried harder to take a page or several from his book. Everything about him seemed to say "I'm not sure where I'm going, but I'll be living large along the way". I'm wondering who among you happened to run into him while he was on that journey, which if I had to guess is still going strong.
