In the media luncheon, Gary Darnell mentioned a couple of times that our defense was doing this and was a reason we blitzed more (18 times) against Army than any game so far. What is this and why would it result in more blitzing?

In Billy's report he mentioned the offense "playing ahead of the chains," and I kind of wondered what that meant as well.

behind the chains on defense means that they have a short yardage play. the LOS is ont yeard from the end of the chains, so your team is all "behind" the chains

And on offense having a distance of greater than 10 yards to go for first down - the o is behind the chains.

The longer the chain, the more confusion, manipulation, and errors are introduced.
The idea behind the chain is to filter the important information from the unimportant
Summarize the key insights as inputs to the strategic decision-making process
The goal is to eliminate the chain. The functions of data knowledge, information filtering, and summarizing are clearly defined based on the requirements and are not subject to spin or manipulation. The requirements are implemented in a series of flexible reporting and navigation tools that allow decision makers to have the same level of visibility that an analyst would have.
Is it possible to truly eliminate the degrees of separation between decision makers and the data that drives the decisions?

On offense, playing behind the change is where you don't gain (much) positive yardage.

Behind:

2nd & 10+
2nd & 8
3rd & 7

Ahead

the 'playing behind the chains' is kind of a new phrase. Seems like it started 5 years ago or so.

"Playing behind the chains" is new to me. I like it, and hope I get to use it often. Preferably, referring to our opponent's struggles, not our own.

It just means the defense is blitzing and getting past the line of scrimmage into the offenses backfield. Since the first down chains start at the line of scrimmage they are behind the chains.

I've never understood why so many coaches say that their offense needs to get "un-tracked". I always thought it would make more sense to "get back on track".
