I know a lot of y'all don't watch because "ESPN..." Whatever
There was a good conversation, specifically with Coach Saban and some points by Mcafee. They were talking specifically about the power of the bench. It doesn't have the power that it used to. The bench used to have the very real power to open the ears and get players to listen. When the butt is on the bench the brain gets the very clear message that it must change the performance of the body.
NIL along with unlimited transfer has changed that. They also talked about some of what we've suspected that there are players out there with play time minimums in their NIL contract. All of this reduces the threat of the bench on players. Getting benched used to mean your future options were getting narrower. If you aren't a starter your draft prospects are getting slimmer and slimmer. That is very motivating. If you're getting 7 figures regardless, that starts to cut into the motivation to do the work.
Sure most of us know that isn't the high life and there probably aren't many on this board (TexAgs millionaires jokes aside) that are looking to retire on a low 7-figure nest egg without another income stream. These kids don't know that. Some, like Johnny, come form mid-high cash flow homes but plenty of them come from little to nothing. "Trust fund kids" are absolutely the VERY rare exception. Point is they see the first NIL contract as the golden ticket. As such they have 3-4 years of that money going to roll in and they're set. Sure the NFL is great and I'm sure they want to go, but my point is the bench isn't as motivating as it used to be. That NIL winning lotto ticket will run out before most of those kids are 30.
