According to advanced player evaluation and tracking databases, Marcel Reed ranks 161st nationally among all FBS quarterbacks in yards per pass attempt for the 2026 season.
His national standing drops even further in specialized passing efficiency metrics. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranks his pure passing performance at 245th out of 276 qualified quarterbacks nationwide.

At this point it's almost statistically impossible that both backups would be worse.

I think there are other forcing functions for how bad reed is showing. The o line, rbs that cant block and qr dropping catchable balls. Im on the fence as to whether a backup would show any better.

True, and while I think they very well may be worse, and the team might quit if you bench their buddy, the team has already abjectly failed with their buddy.

At this point, you can see the body language in the receivers. I'm already concerned about keeping Edwards. The defense has played with grit, but they aren't anywhere close to as talented as OU, so eventually the dam breaks in the second halves (UK, LSU, Mizz).

While I think Hart and Casuga are bad enough to make all remaining conference games borderline non competitive, Reed is already doing that, and doing it predictably. At some point you have to try the mystery box, even when you're pretty sure it's another lump of coal.

Maybe they wouldn't be better, but you at least f***ing try something. What is the worst that can happen? Lose again? We're already doing that.

You may be right, but at some point it's bad enough that you just have to find out if a backup is one of those kids that does better under the lights.

I remember JFF and Jameil Showers being a competition deep into the spring/summer, but on the field Johnny just turned it on.

I fully expect our backups to fall flat. I just think you have to try at some point. When the only confident win remaining is citadel, you have to start asking what you're protecting by NOT trying to find out.

Also, Reed is making a ton of mistakes that have nothing to do with blocking or WR quality - consistently missing on open throws with time.

At this point we're pretty close to the baseline of victory formation every down.

Marcel's the same guy, same erratic everything, with the same ****ty feet in his throwing.
In his prior "success" (if you wanna call it that) we had a much better run game, more experienced OLine, and a stud at RB.

When we lost LeVeon at SCar, we got the exact same version of Marcel as we have right now. Then the DC's got a chance to see that if they sell out on the run, he'll be forced to throw, and we're F'd.

It's also not on Wiggins when Reed can't complete a 10 yard ball to a wide open target.
If you want him to draw up more easy throws, that's great....except Marcel can't hit those either.

And what's crazy....i'm betting Marcel looks great in practice. No pressure, plus that green shirt, meaning a nice safe space to just throw the ball around.
But when the lights are on and we're playing with live ammo....woof....

And I think that's where the coaches are just completely dumbfounded. Marcel's probably good in practice, the other QB's are comparatively less effective....and when we get to games, it's just major WTF.

This.
Plus you've got a send a message to the team that literally NOBODY is safe.
You play bad, you get pulled, and next man up....regardless of position.

You've also gotta be mindful of what's happening in that QB room with the mentality of the backups.
"damn, this Reed dude is playing like total ass....and I'm still not getting a shot here?? If that's the case, then why am i here? And why wouldn't I just transfer to a place that'll at least give me a fair shot....hmmmm...."

he is 161st among all QBs at FBS schools and there are only 138 FBS schools. So there are 23 backups at other schools better than him. and even MORe with the other metric.

So many on here are backpedaling with a disclaimer before they will state that it's time to try something different. They say things like "I think the backup QB's will fall flat"" or "the backups will be a lump of coal, but it's time to try something different". Why can't everyone simply agree we've seen enough, it's time for a change without the flippin' disclaimer.

I don't buy the story that Marcel looks great in practice all the time but can't hit the broad side of a barn in a game.

He can't hit wide receivers that are uncovered, standing still, facing him, when he has no pressure and nobody in his face, and all he has to do is take a one step drop and throw at a stationary target.

A wide receiver pick screen is one of the easiest throws to make in football. You are throwing against air.

Not only can he not make this pass half the time, he's putting the ball in the dirt 8 yards in front of the receiver.

Nobody is super accurate in practice all the time and then throws this poorly in games consistently, game in and game out.

Elko just does not have another option he's either willing to go with, or he is just plain stubborn as hell.

And to think Hart and Casuga are even worse (according to Elko)!!!!

All at a program that has one the highest payrolls and sells 105,000+ tickets every game!!!???@#%&*^!?$@#%??!!

Its like Twighlight Zone or alt Universe stuff Elko has created.

Utterly mind blowing.
