When a reporter asked Elko how challenging it is to recruit quarterback depth behind an established starter like Marcel Reed, the head coach didn't mince words.

"Oh, I think it's impossible," Elko said. "I don't think anybody anywhere is recruiting depth out of the portal. I don't think there are SEC-level players in the country that are trying to go places where you have an established starter. I don't think that's a real thing."

Wish it was impossible for Elko to be employed here.

The article points out that it is extremely difficult to get a good backup in the current environment, not just for elko but all teams. No kid with talent is willing to forego money or potential playing time. Elko chose reed after last year and in hindsight probably should have moved on. I do think that is a really tough call. Nobody would have thought reed would not improve and worse, regress.

There's definitely some validity to what is being said but it's far from impossible.... that's a cop out

There were options but Elko is smarter than everyone else... & now his qb can't hit 5 yard drags, & the qb on the bench isn't allowed to throw the ball

What is Elko flinging when he continues to defend his decision?

Skill guys and QBs need to come out of the portal. We have missed on too many receivers and QBs in the last 10 years. You know what you are getting in a transfer and we need to go all in on good wrs and QBs in the portal

It is always hard to get a good backup! No 5 star qb has ever wanted to sit behind another player.

What is likely the bigger issue is that the offense teams run is too hard to execute for most qbs. A great running game or a mobile qb can mask that.

But here is a thought, maybe run an offense your personnel can execute well. That is the difference between a really good and great coach. Can they change their system to their players or are they dependent on the players to work their system.
