I have posted my conference realignment before, and it would seem the powers that be had similar ideas, because one of my suggestions has already come true in the fact of the current Pac 12 (besides Texas State lol)

Here are the rules:
1. No Independents
2. No conferences with more than 16 teams
3. Preserving rivalries and historic conference ties is general priority
4. Conferences must be regional, if not then the divisions within them
5. Max number of years a school should go without playing a team in their conference is 2 years**

As for the playoff, we should use the historic bowl series as the foundation for playoff seeds.

NY6 - Cotton, Orange, Rose, Sugar, Peach, Fiesta
Other Historic - Sun, Gator, Citrus, Liberty, Holiday, Independence

Winners of NY6 plus 2 highest ranked from others is your perfect 8 team playoff
edit: No more committee, just use BCS computer rankings

And finally, NIL money should be put into a trust until after graduation. Early declaration for draft or transfer should forfeit all funds. Players can access funds through team money manager (similar to former bagmen) but they will not get millions at 18 years old for obvious reasons.

** 16 team conferences have a 4 team pod/division system. You play your pod (3 teams) and 2 teams from each of the other 3 pods (9 conference games). After home/away series with other pods, switch to the other teams. Everyone plays everyone home/away within 4 years

Here are the conferences-

There I fixed it all. You're welcome. Someone tell the commissioner(s)

I propose we go back to the BCS days. Pick one and two - let them play.

Some NIL money results from private contracts between the player and company.

I am pretty sure you cannot force them to put that money in a trust.

I mean courts/schools and make policy around anything they want but those contracts would have to happen without affiliation to the university, which does happen but basically if you combine your NIL with university brand then those funds should be in a trust.

I like this, but part of the whole issue is putting lighting back in the bottle. For instance- we can't expect the old Pac 12 to suddenly reemerge.

I forgot to mention that I think the playoff committee should be replaced by the BCS computer rankings which is basically what the committee uses before making their own judgements

Who gets to program the ranking and how do you guarantee transparency?

The BCS ranking has been known for a long time and only had issues with ranking 1 and 2 a handful of times. Since is it very accurate, we simply eliminate the limitation of 1v2 and open it to 8 teams. There is no way the formula would miss the best team in the country from a pool of 8 teams.

Here is how the BCS formula works

I would go with.

1. No independents
2. Regional conferences with 9 teams (no need for CCGs)
3. Teams must play at least 2 OOC games against a power 6 conference, one of their choosing and one against a team that ended with the same standing in an opposing conference
4. Army-Navy the first Saturday of December, 8 team CFP on the 2nd and 3rd weekends of December, bowl games for the 3rd and 4th Saturdays, and national championship after that.

But knowing that that is too big of an undertaking, I'd like to just expand the CFP to 24 teams. Every team in a P4 CCG is automatically in the 2nd round of the CFP. The top 16 teams not in a CCG also play seeded matchups on campus on the same weekend as the conference champions. So after that weekend, I have the 8 conference champions + their runner ups and the 8 teams that survived "play-in weekend." The CFP Committee ranks the 16 teams and begin the round of 16 on campus.

Expanding the playoff just moves us further away from meaningful regular seasons

We already had a scattered playoff system called the bowl series where the best teams get invited to the best bowls, so we just need to combine them into a playoff

Miami had a good run, but no team outside the top 10 should even be considered for a national championship, therefore the playoff is already too big

Those contracts are small compared to university funding, outside of very few major stars/brands. So it's a non-issue that should not dictate the rest of the sport/players. Again if university branding is included in the NIL contract then the funds should be put into a trust managed by the institution

I don't like expanding the CFP. I think we had the best thing at a 4 team playoff. The team that was at the pinnacle of the "best" versus "most deserving" graph always got into that playoff and had a chance to win it.

That being said, sure we had meaningful regular seasons back then, but we had meaningless bowls, instead. Even if you went back to the BCS system today, you would have meaningless bowls where guys sit out of the sugar bowl. And although regular season games may not be as meaningful now as they were 20 years ago, they are far from meaningless. I just like my CFP model because it makes conference championship games meaningful, and something worth playing for. They're even more important than a regular season game, but no team can be kicked from the CFP for playing in it.

Now, to be clear with this next statement, I'm not saying I want CFB to conform to be like other sports... I loved watching the 2nd place team from the NFC East go and spoil the juggernaut Patriots in the super bowl both times the Giants did it, even though they didn't even deserved to stand in the same stadium after 16 games.

Why did you put Oklahoma State in the Pac 12? That makes no sense at all.

Tech and Oklahoma State are natural rivals. They need to be in a pod together. One of the dumbest things the Big 12 did was to get rid of them playing each other every year.

One thing you pointed out that I am super desperate for is to bring the BCS back as the ranking entity. I've had enough of the committee's politics and money chasing.

Oklahoma State hasn't won a conference game in two seasons and their in state rival left. There's nothing for them in the big 12 and no Tech is not a rival https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_State_Cowboys_football

I admit this was the hardest decision to make regionally but in the real world Pac 12 already added Texas State so coming this far east isn't far fetched

If I were in charge, I'd create eight 8-team conferences, roughly geographically based. Each team plays all seven of its conference mates, plus five teams from other conferences randomly selected each year. Eight conference champs make the playoffs, plus eight at-large teams.

The last-place team in each conference is relegated to the mid-major division, where there are eight more 8-team conferences. The winner of those mid-major conferences gets promoted each year.

Army and Navy should not be in the same POD. Their deal with the American is they never play a regular season game as they have their own date.
Bowl games should not be part of the playoffs. College towns and communities should be rewarded for a strong football team, and not have it go to the pockets of a tourism council. Home football games would be the most exciting games for most teams.

I'd like for P4 teams to play a 12-game schedule featuring only P4 teams. No G6 teams in the regular season, no G6 in the post-season.

Playoff Format
1. Expand to 16 playoff teams.
2. No automatic bids for conference champions.
3. Top 16 teams qualify based on ranking and rsum.
4. Group of 6 teams only qualify if ranked in the Top 16.
5. No first-round byes.
6. Seeds 1-8 host first-round games on campus.
7. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship remain at neutral sites/bowl venues.
8. Reseed after the first round (optional).

Scheduling Reform
1. Every Power 4 team must play at least one Power 4 nonconference opponent annually.
2. No Power 4 team may play a Group of 6 or FCS opponent in November.
3. Uniform conference schedules across the Power 4.
4. Strength of schedule becomes a major ranking factor.

Eligibility Reform
1. Maximum of 5 seasons of competition.
2. 5-year eligibility clock begins upon full-time enrollment.
3. Eliminate most waiver-based extensions and extra eligibility years.
4. Declaring for the NFL Draft permanently ends college eligibility.

Transfer Portal & NIL
1. One transfer portal window per year.
2. Multi-year scholarship guarantees.
3. Greater NIL transparency.
4. Revenue sharing with athletes.
5. Stronger penalties for tampering and recruiting violations.

Way too many conferences and teams. We don't get enough games pitting the best teams against each other. Need the P4 to break away and have all P4 matchups every week. Just give money to the G5 teams instead of playing them.

9 conference games. 3 non-conference games one apiece against each of the other conferences. Conference championships go away. 16 team playoff. Seeds and teams ranked with BCS computer model. First round played on campus. Quarterfinals and semifinals are played at the big 6 bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Peach). Championship played at an NFL stadium

NIL and Revenue sharing should be transparent and viewable like a salary cap. Players are allowed one transfer. Unless they graduate and can get a 2nd transfer their senior year.

I think 12 Power 4 games is too much. My preference would be 9 conference games, 1 Power 4 nonconference game, and 2 Group of 6/FCS games. Ten Power 4 games is enough to evaluate teams and improve strength of schedule without turning every season into an absolute gauntlet.

BCS is superior to the committee in rewarding strength of schedule. It takes all the corrupt humans out of seeding the teams. The problem was less with the BCS and more with the fact that there were many years with 3 or more good teams that deserved a shot dnd you could only pick 2

Playoffs: Expand to at least 24 teams

NIL: No changes

Portal: No changes

Conferences: make more regional. This one is hard because I would honestly prefer the old SWC but I'm probably in the minority here. Put the PAC10/ACC back the way they were.

Governance: Dissolve the NCAA whose only real job was to make sure players didn't get paid by making examples of the right list of schools. Form a real governing body over all the conferences.

That's it. Easy peasy.

Agree.

  • Go back to the old conference bowl tie ins.
  • Do away with university and related booster NIL.
  • Any athlete is free to make as much money as they can. That said, their employer must submit information to a clearinghouse that verifies no ties to said university where they attend.
  • University provides room, board, medical, scholarship, and stipend for odds and ends.

If I had the power to reset conference alignment, scheduling and the playoff system....

- 9 conferences with 9 teams each split across 3 Leagues (SEC, BIG, PAC)
- 11 or 12 regular season games:
> 8 games vs your conference
> 2 games vs the other two conferences in your league (based on prior year results)
> 1 permanent rival outside of you conference (but could still be in your league)
> 1 buy game or extra bye week
- Regular season starts Labor Day weekend and runs through Thanksgiving weekend (13 weeks)

The playoff would be 16 teams. Each conference winner makes it (only conference games count). So that gives us 9 auto bids, and then 6 at large bids. 1 more bid goes to the G7 (I'll get to that). 16 teams are seeded based off a BCS type ranking system.

Playoffs start the first weekend of December with Army/Navy game Thursday night, 2 playoff games Friday night, and 6 playoff games Saturday. Higher seed hosts on campus.

Second weekend of December we have 8 teams, all 4 games played on that Saturday. Higher see hosts on campus.

Semi finals will be played on New Year's Day, and then the final will be played the 2nd Monday of January.
- Semifinals in Year 1 (Rose/Cotton) & Final (Peach)
- Semifinals in Year 2 (Fiesta/Sugar) & Final (Orange)

In year 1, the Fiesta/Sugar/Orange bowls will be used for other schools participating in the bowl season. The bowl season will be 20 bowls (40 teams) with Fiesta/Sugar/Orange getting first dibs (with conference/league ties). Rose bowl would choose a school from the PAC/BIG, etc. These games would start Dec 15 and run through Dec 31st.

The G7 (Group of 7 other conferences). These teams would piece together a 11/12 game regular schedule. The highest ranked team from the G7 will have the option to make the 16 Playoff (likely seeded 16). They can opt out of the playoff and choose to just play in the Bowl Season. If so, a 7th at-large bid would go out to the 9 conferences.

TLDR - There will be 81 teams that can make a 16 team playoff. Conferences are regional and hold historic matchups, with flexibility to add a permanent rival if not in the same conference. 3 Leagues consisting of 3 conferences, with 9 teams in each conference. I used current NIL money spent for including teams in the top 81 (for the most part).

Maybe tying some of the G7 conferences to each of the Leagues could create a relegation system...but American's would never go for something like that.
