Each school has a gauge installed and coaches have an app that tells them the WBGT. I guess they can practice at 6am and 7pm until October when it starts to cool down......
Big change for Texas school sports this year!
Starting this year, the UIL will use something called the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to determine whether it's safe for athletes to practice outdoors.
Unlike the regular air temperature, the WBGT takes heat, humidity, sunshine, and wind into account to better measure how stressful the conditions are on the human body. In many cases, the WBGT can indicate a much higher level of heat stress than the air temperature alone.
Depending on the WBGT reading, schools may have to:
- Increase water breaks
- Provide more rest in the shade
- Shorten or modify practices
- Or even cancel outdoor activities altogether
WBGT Practice Guidelines
Below 82.0F -Normal outdoor activities.
82.0-86.9F -Rapid cooling zone required (ice bath or other cooling equipment on site).
87.0-90.0F -Maximum 2-hour practice. Helmet, shoulder pads, and shorts only. Frequent hydration and rest breaks.
90.1-92.0F -Maximum 1-hour practice. No conditioning drills. No protective equipment. Extended rest breaks.
92.1F or higher - No outdoor practice permitted
