Forgive me if this has been mentioned on another thread but...

I noticed more people wearing hats in the MSC today than I ever before. Granted, you can say that MAYBE a few of them were unaware of the tradition, but do the large signs on the doors and in the entrance not give it away? What about the hundreds of other people taking their hats off before they walk in? The sad part was that the majority of the people with hats on were also wearing Aggie Rings or dorm shirts... I honestly tried to tell as many people as I could to uncover but I was fighting a losing battle...

Just make sure people know by politely reminding them. That is the most you can do. Also, remember to tell them why if they look puzzled when you tell them to remove it.

It is the first weeks of classes/football so it is very possible people just forgot.

I am not a hat wearer and I always forget at least once a year.

I only had to remind one guy, and he was gracious about it. I agree that it's probably folks that genuinely just forgot...

Quit *****ing about hats in the MSC? I'm not even that Red Ass and that's never been a question for me. The M in MSC stands for Memorial, not Moron, take your hat off, or leave campus.

Everyone makes mistakes. Most of the time, if you politely remind them, they'll take it off and apologize. Just don't yell across the hallway or anything.

Not to sound overly pious or anything, but i never go to a game without making a side trip to the front entrance of the MSC to read the names. A&M knows where its going because it knows where its been.

For goodness sakes, what is our collective obssession with hats!?! It sounds like we're all majoring in Hat Studies these days. Find something else to observe, please.

chevs is a sip. Hats off in the MSC has been around a LONG time. I saw two people, politely tapped them on the shoulder and asked them to take their hats off. They both rolled their eyes, but took them off. Its not a losing battle until people become apathetic, which it is up to us to keep that from happening.

Hats off in the MSC is posted at the entrance... not a big deal.
Hats off when dining used to be commonplace too.
Hell, hats off inside anywhere used to be the norm.
Maybe we should have had Miss Manners speak out at First Yell?

And Uncover for Yells isn't that big a deal either- it's not like we Yell more than 9 or 10 times a game anyhow.

Guys, you have a campus of near 50,000 + professors/staff + thousands of visitors and common sense tells you that not everybody is going to remember. I won't lie, half the time I forget mainly because I normally don't wear hats and I'm so used to just walking in and out of the place that the signs just no longer grab my attention. Politely remind people to remove their hat. Don't be a jerk about it. It is certainly nothing to get irritated about.

I memorialize these Ags too and respect what they did for this county, but sometimes I forget to go through all of the traditions that our students have come up with to memorialize them. There is a lot to remember, please cut me a break?

OK, the MSC is really important for the hats off.

Remember please that is was not just a renamed facility.

It was BUILT to be a permanent memorial. Just at the Bonfire Memorial is being built to be a permanent memorial.

Yes, be polite, but also yes, remind people to take off hats and explain that it is a memorial to the war dead.

What makes A&M different from everyone else is the appreciation of everyone those who came before and allow us to enjoy this university. Just saying I respect this or that does not cut it, in my opinion. I have been to many college campuses and there is little respect for alumni. At A&M it is different, if we start disrespecting the people who made this university what it is and gave their life to fight for our country, than we lose what makes this place special. Please make the effort to remove your hat, it is really not that hard. I personally see it as the least I can do out of respect.

After reminding several people, I quickly realized it was a losing battle and I had to get to the game. I think they need to print bigger signs and post them at the main entrances. The little writing on the doors just isn't cutting it. The corps used to have people go around and ask people to remove their hats. It is obviously not the Corps job to police the university and I am glad they weren't in their doing it any more. Glad so many others feel the same way about the hats still.

I completely agree with you. However, respect is all about what is inside and not outside. Taking off your hat is a nice gesture, but if I forget to do so it doesn't mean I disrespect anybody.

I don't mind taking off my hat at the MSC. It is welcome and a small (very small) token of respect.

HOWEVER, puulleeease, don't yell "UNCOVER" at people and give them nasty looks at the game or the MSC. I would say that the students who do this, make themselves and the institution look absolutely foolish.

People wear hats to 2:30 games to prevent sunburns and avoid nasty problems like skin cancer. When I have 19 year old jerks behind me yelling at my 8 year old son to "UNCOVER! UNCOVER!", I have to say they have no perspective or no maturity. STHU.

It always seems to be someone with an '04 or '05 or '06 suffix(i.e. current student) who seems to be fixated with the "uncover" issue. Funny, it seems we Aggies don't figure out how silly this fixation is until we graduate.

Maybe we need to hire some folks from the TSA so they can stand at the door and not let anyone in until they take off their hats. Perhaps they can even randomly pull people out of the crowd and give them a lecture on how to uncover during yells.

i concur on the yelling of the uncover thing in the msc...all it takes is to ask a person politely and most people will comply

Yeah, an old Ag in a wheel chair had a maroon Aggie cap on his head while rolling along in front of us in the MSC.

I slapped that cap ofhis head so fast, he didnt know what hit him.My wife then took the cap and threw it in a garbage can.

I think it all come back to lack of personal responsibiltiy. "I forgot" is a pretty weak excuse. The first day you step foot on campus you should have it so ingrained in your head no hats in the MSC that you should not "forget." And yes some of it does have to do with the lack of Bonfire. It was the biggest thing that brought students together and instilled some pride in A&M's rich history.

Political correctness has taken the place of being polite and using manners. People can do and say just about anyting they want to now and get away with it. There were some teens sitting not too far from us in the stands using language unfit for any public place. That's much worse than uncovering for a damn yell.

Somebody explain the new carpet in the hallways with NO maroon. It has blue with a dark red streak and the red next to the blue makes it look a little like burnt orange.

I confess. I did wear my hat into the MSC and didn't notice until I got to the restroom mirror. Muttered an oath and removed the hat for what it's worth.
