Looking at the current list of signees at 1pm today, there are 26 players joining the roster next season. Only 9 of them are in-state recruits. That is 34.6% of the total.

2025 -- 15 of 24 (62.5%)

2024 -- 7 of 17 (41.2%)

2023 -- 12 of 17 (70.6%)

2022 -- 17 of 30 (56.7%)

2021 -- 14 of 21 (66.7%)

For those that follow recruiting, does anybody have opinions on this? Should we be recruiting in-state more? Does it really matter? Does recruiting matter at all? What is the meaning of life?

Look at our pre-2013-ish recruiting classes made of 99.9% Texas kids. Compare that to our last 10 classes and that'll answer your questions.

Everything is national these days and we just don't have a ton of pull in state. We dont really have a big localized TX recruiter on our staff. Amazing when I started following this stuff I knew who on staff recruited which region of the state.

Alot of Jimbo not showing up to things to fix. A lot of us being more enticing out of state for whatever reason. It is what it is.

I will say #9 after this year probably isnt going to cut it.

You probably know more about recruiting than I do. But after the Jimbo #1 class fiasco, I am happy with a top 10 class if it includes character along with measurables.

Truly amazing how this fan base can go out of their way to create things to complain about.

This is a harmful stereotype for you DEI Types so trigger warning!!!

I don't think Texas produces defensive players as well as some other states in the SEC.

I think it is good for this reason to recruit at a national level, also recruiting nationally harms other programs we are competing against.

This #9 class is deeper with talent than most of the classes ranked above it. The Texas class, for example, is ranked higher because they have two composite 5 stars, but there is a big ratings drop off after their first dozen players. Our class goes at least 22 deep before you see that kind of drop off. I would absolutely take our class over theirs, Tennessee's, Oregon's, Ohio State's and probably even Georgia's and Alabama's classes as they stand today. And it sounds like we've added another solid 4 star running back to our class today to close it out. I think ESPN has us ranked 6th.

This is a great class. Very deep with talent, and still plenty of room for big portal additions.

The best in Texas have to want to come. If not go get them where you can.
Why settle for less just to have Texas players?

This.

BUT WHAT IF WE ARE PLAYING 4D CHESS?!?!
Recruit HS from out of state and get whoever you can to stick (obviously). Then you are prime target for all the Texas kids that hit the portal and want to be back closer to home.

I'm mostly kidding.

But if NIL and whatever else convinces a lot of kids to leave the state and our staff can still go secure a top 10 class? That's a good thing. I can remember a time when we either got the good kids from Texas or we got the next tier of kids from Texas and just had to live with it. Ask RC how that worked out (no disrespect - but it's just what happened).

Coach Elko and staff need to go get the talent wherever that talent is.
There was a time when there was enough talent in Texas to not recruit nationally.
In fact I think that was Coach Slocum's mindset back in the day.
Those days are long gone.

As long as it translates to wins on the field, I couldn't care less where the recruits come from.

Go get the best players and where they live is irrelevant.

My biggest complaint about RC, Fran and Sherman was that either we didn't want to spend money to go out of state or we just were too lazy

Lots Kids LIKE to go away for college, just as others want to stay close to home.

We spent decades ignoring awesome athletes looking to go out of state because we were so focused on Texas.

Go ge the best kids no matter where they are!

I don't give AF where they come from. If Elko thinks they are good for the team, get them.
