We all wanted to beat Texas, but we didn't, which really sucked. However, I have been thinking about this a lot, and have to come to realize this may be what's best for this team.
- Marcel Reed gets an extra week for his ankle.
Marcel Reed got hurt, yes he came back the next drive, but he played the rest of that game injured. He ran the ball a couple times after that, and didn't look to hobbled, but those of us that have had similar injuries know, he was feeling pain with every step.
- Home playoff game
We won't get a bye, but it's likely we will get a home playoff game. If we are able to get the 5 or 6, with 6 seeming most likely, we will play a GO5 team, or the ACC champ. That would be a game with all of the hype of a playoff game, but against a far inferior team. Getting that win will instill confidence into the players that we desperately need.
- second round
With a win, we would have had a bye week in the first round, and our first taste of the playoffs would be a neutral site game against a really good team. I am of the opinion that late season bye weeks don't help, and can kill your momentum. Unless you have an important player that needs to heal an injury (like Marcel reed during conference championship week) a bye week can actually do more bad than good for a college football team. However now, assuming we win round 1, we will be coming off a huge playoff home win, with all the momentum restored back into the program.
- Worst case scenario
Worst case scenario, is we end up at 8, or even worse 9, and have to play Notre Dame, or Oklahoma. Those are really tough first round games, and with a win, we would then go to play Ohio State. This route is daunting, and would take a massive effort to overcome.
- Bottom Line
This loss has granted us the opportunity to play a home playoff game, against a team that everyone knows has no business playing with the rest of the field. We will likely get to notch a playoff victory onto our bet for the first time in program history. Then, the players and fan base will be re-engaged, giving us the momentum we need to make a run.
