This deal with Kiffen is a mess. I think it will change college football. If not and it happens a few more times like this I can't see them not taking a look at it.

1. If he takes the LSU job he should absolutely not coach the playoff games. He's going to be coaching/ recruiting for LSU and coach Ol Miss in the playoffs?? That ain't gonna work out for Ol Miss. The fans are going to be pissed. He's going to talking to some of the better players about transferring to LSU. This is as bad or worse than the Schlossnagle deal. F*%j that guy by the way. Recruiting our players to a rival or in another in conference team??? What a mess.

2. Early signing period- December 3, 2025- this is also a problem. Coaches feel like they have to leave their teams in order to recruit for their new team in December when the season is not already over. Coaches trying to coach playoff games are coaching and recruiting which is probably not going to change but what a distraction at the end of the year. Not sure why December is necessary.

3. The transfer portal timing- January 2nd. Players on teams that are not still in the hunt for a national title feel like they have to sit out of games and now the bowls suck. I get but it's not making the game better. Coaches are focused on signing transfer portals guys while trying to prepare for the playoffs. I guess if it doesn't bother the coaches it should not bother me. Maybe it wouldn't change even if this date was different. Not sure

4. National signing day Feb 4th - why does this even exist anymore if all of the above are in place. This a worthless date now. It should be the first time that kids can singn like it used to be because that would fix a lot of what's going on above. Just wait until after the bowls and NC game.

5. Texas A&M should absolutely has a penalty that if you leave for our rival or you leave to coach in conference then you buyout is ridiculous. So big that no one would ever do it. If we didn't learn in baseball then shame on us. Some of you will say that coaches wouldn't agree to this we're paying people millions dollars a year to coach.
This is not unreasonable.

I agree. While Schloss was personal to me, this is so much worse for Ole Miss fans. We didn't know about impropriety until after it was over. They have dealt with it for a month now and it has tarnished the entire season of joy for them and will affect their entire playoff season.

No wonder coaches are interested in jumping to NFL, where they know their roster is set. I understand kids can earn on their NIL, but allowing them to jump ship without remorse or penalty should not be part of that deal. Make them sit out a year to transfer and this will help them to at least resemble "student/athletes".

Without thinking too deeply about the consequences of the following:

Remove the early signing period.
Reduce the recruiting windows during the season to almost nothing.
Have portal signing day in February.
Have fish signing day in May.

Part of the issue with transfers and coaching changes is that the season now stretches into the spring semester. Before, someone could coach/play the entire season and then transfer for spring. Now, to be enrolled for spring, they have to leave before a playoff run. Being tied to enrollment is part of the problem.

The demise of college football. It's mercenary football / semi-pro. Many won't play for the name on the front of the jersey. I haven't watched pro football in years and can't say I miss it.

And you factor in Ole Miss desperation. They would have done anything to keep him, including allowing him to string them along for 2+ weeks. In retrospect, they should be able to fire him with cause, and give themselves a chance to piece together a staff for the post-season. I'm not saying it's wrong to look for another job; but when your employer knows it, they have to be able to deliver an ultimatum and not just be held hostage.

I think so, and I don't say that lightly.
1) college football business >>> college baseball business
2) with early signing day coming up, the timing is horrific for Ole Miss
3) our saga was over in a couple days, which limited the damage and poaching schloss could do. kiffin is trying to drag this out for 5-6 weeks
4) both options are horrible for Ole Miss: let him stay, coach, and poach OR head into your first playoffs with no HC?

A bonus that is less certain: there is a ton of buyout money at stake. If Ole Miss says no you're done today, will LSU refuse to pay Kiffin's buyout under a theory that Ole Miss fired him?

What is the biggest problems I have with this whole scenario is that all these coaches are asking our alumni to put a huge money for players. That's their argument. "I need better players." then schools cut up the money and get better players and get the playoffs and then the coach runs away for a different job. There has to be consequences. These coaches can't just be allowed to do whatever they want and still get $10 million a year.

He does have a history of doing that. Even before the transfer portal and NIL. Set Tennessee back for years with three bad coaching hires after Kiffin left them high and dry, taking players and coaches.

He supposedly has quit drinking but his behavior is still the same.

Kiffin has been toxic for a long time. Any team considering hiring him for the last five or six years should have known that, including Ole Miss.

College sports are still... college required.

Should schools completely adjust their Semester timings for recruiting?

I'm laughing at his ultimatum to Ole Miss: "Either let me coach the CFP or I'll poach players on my way out."

As if Kiffen hasn't shown everyone who he is.

He should be shown the door immediately. He's going to poach players either way. Letting him stick around simply gives him more time to make his pitch to the players he wants.

Definitely Schloss 2.0.

If he does this, they can't play in the playoffs right? Wouldn't they have to transfer in time to get enrolled for the spring and thus miss out on the playoffs? So do the players have to pick between going with their coach versus playing in the playoffs?

Ole miss will be trying to fill 2/3 of their roster with a coach they panic hired.

The ncaa should do something about this. Lsu allowed to essentially take a top 10 caliber rival off the table for the foreseeable future through in season tampering.

Got to put something in the contract that deals w this madness

The coaches have all the leverage, esp in this scenario

Just bc they tell him you are not coaching the playoffs, doesn't mean he is fired.

And lsu has no leverage. It's not like they want lane stuck at ole miss through their playoff run.

LSU will have to pay the buyout.

Here's a noval idea.....it would stop the poaching dead. If a coach leaves early noone from the curent team can be signed to his new team for a two years.

A school who poaches should have a no conference or bowl payoffs for two year forfeiting school share of playoff money.......now lets see how many schools, coaches and players want to play for nothing.

The only way to stop this maddness is in the pocket for both schools, coaches and players

You sound petty and likely not a good person to work for.

I like to develop and mentor my employees and help them advance in their career. I have an employee that has an offer for 30% more than he is making for me. He is struggling with leaving because he loves working for me. I've met his wife, mom, and family. I told his mother what an outstanding son she has.

I told him he is worth the offer he got and if that wasn't his move, more offers like that will be made to him and he will likely leave at some point. He is at the top of what the position he has, but has a much higher ceiling. There just isn't upward opportunities in our company.

I told him if he stays, no hard feeling about him looking externally.

It really isn't that hard to want more for your employees.

Ole Miss knew what they were getting when they hired him. They are big boys - they can sort it out. Can't imagine they are stupid enough to let him coach out.

I think part of the reason the portal window is where it is, is because of the school calendar - ie getting guys on campus and enrolled prior to the start of the spring semester. If you move it to after the NC game that is not possible.

Question just to keep the scenario similar. If this employee accepted the 30% more offer would he try to take your top clients with him and be a direct competitor to your current business which could negatively affect your well being?

I don't think the issue is him looking. The issue is supposedly demanding that he get to coach or he's taking players with him.
B-1 83

Some of these replies elude to my other post. That late portal time seems to make it tough to register and get enrolled in classes at a new school. If a kid says he is sitting out the bowl game or his team isn't in a bowl game, why not let them get to business?
