The last time I was in DKR was 2010 and things have changed.
They run their gameday experience like a variety show or some sort of cheesy musical.
They have a host, I'll call Rico Suave, who runs around in a black suit with a microphone. At different points n the game they cut to him and broadcast him on the Jumbotron doing some sort of variety show activity with popped collar of course.
Some of the acts include celebrity cameos: Glen Powell, Miranda Lambert, Matthew McConaughey and his kids, and apparently Woody Harrelson.
Some acts include music: last night it was a large female mariachi band that was featured multiple times throughout the evening on the Jumbotron.
Some acts include lights: the band had neon lights attached to their heads? They turned the stadium lights off and the band made different neon images with their marching, including a giant cowboy hat that mirrored their fake cowboy hats. Then they had drones that lit up different images in the sky. Several times they turned down the stadium lights and everyone had their phone lights turned on. And finally, the giant uterus in the south end zone lights up at different times throughout the night.
They have a giant bass drum and a tiny fake cannon that sounds like a capgun. Lots of giant Texas flags at different points that they fold and spin in different new and exciting ways. A drugged bovine steer who eats watermelon while being handled by fake cowboys. And some fat guy who rips his shirt off and does a disgusting truffle shuffle on the Jumbotron.
They pump in more sound then we do as the crowd is quieter than ours.
I do think they did a better job of using technology, lighting and the variety show strategically to distract our team. The timing for some of the more distracting elements, like turning all the lights off, always happened while we were starting out on offense for example.
All in all it felt fake and sad. And made me even madder that we lost…because the atmosphere honestly sucks. It's the perfect representation for a university that thinks they are something greater than what they are…I kept waiting for the midgets, the bearded woman and the contortionists to show up…sadly the did not.
Finally, old people like variety shows…or so I'm told. The crowd is old. Lots of old people. They limit their student pull and it shows. Olds everywhere.
Crowd: felt much angrier than Kyle. Every single penalty called against the whorns was met with extremely loud cussing and yelling by old adults. My kids were there and the adults around us didn't care at all. It was surprising and weird. The anger level was very high.
That all being said, the tailgate scene was good and the highlight of the gameday experience. However, I will not be going back. It felt fake, angry and manufactured.
