Beyond all the obvious stupidities of that goalline play, someone explain THIS part:

The option is to run or pass wide to Marcel. But the "trickery" or "surprise" is that you would throw it wide to Marcel.

So WHY would you first FAKE A PITCH to Marcel running wide, especially with no blockers out there for him?

It just brimgs the D out there to cover, (like it did), but it also slows down the point of attack for the run- making us hold blocks longeer AND risking a penetrating sack of the RB, which almost happened

I can't think of any good reason for the fake pitch at the start, unless it was to freeze the end on exge while the
pulling blockers came around, but that sounds really
iffy as opposed to just having the RB pause a 1/2 second to see if the hole is there and THEN passing the ball to the QB leaking out to the side without drawing attention.

I thought the SC player blew up the pitch to Marcel and the rb held onto it rather than pitching, then panicked and tried the pass rather than hanging on for a loss.

I think this is essentially correct which is why you don't put a freshman ( or anyone else for that matter) in that position . Had he just gone down and we kick a fg or go for it on 4th down for that matter things wouldn't have been so nerve wracking.

The unanimous and emphatic opinion at the watch party I attended was that it was a very stupid, risky, and unnecessary call from the one yard line.

It was supposed to be a pitch to Marcel immediately, it got blown up, Morrow panicked and threw it late anyway. Dumb play when we needed points. Force SC to score a TD to win not a FG.

Ah, thanks! that makes more sense.

from the head-on view, looks like Morriw couldve scored if he hsd just tucked it and ran immediately after not pitching it.

Silver lining…

When asked about it, Elko took all the heat and said it was his fault (for that call). Not sure if that's true but what a difference between him and a coach like Brian Kelly who consistently threw coaches and players under the bus.

We got a good person and a great coach leading this team. It's easy to see that the players have bought in.

If Scar wins on a scoop and score everyone would have been rage posting calling for Kleins head.

We've been getting very inventive on the goal line ALL YEAR LONG. There have been college football shows talking about it too. Especially "The Film Guy". Out of everything that happened yesterday that's the thing that bothers me the most by far.

I usually appreciate creativity and usually give our guys a pass when in hindsight it didn't work out, but when you dominate offensively like that for the entire half and are about to put a stamp on it, that was about the dumbest thing possible. No way EJ doesn't score if we hand it to him the next two plays.

I would think that it's obvious to our players and coaches that they must fix all the numerous mistakes made in this game, since better teams going forward will crush you !

I like the idea. Marcel is so elusive if you can get him the ball wide, I like his chances to make someone miss at the goal line. He's done it plenty of times this year. When you draw it up you don't anticipate someone completely blowing up the play so quickly.

Here's one thing I really hope Klein figured out from this game. Slow developing plays can have bad results against teams with talent on the edge.

Our game plan was not great in the 1st half.

This needs to be figured out quick and Georgia just gave us the game plan to beat the Texas defense.

Definitely some kind of an option and when The DE gets that far into the backfield the better option is to not pitch and run it
Really good DEs will blow That play up regularly which is why very few teams run it as their base offense

It was a dumb play call. Elko in his presser said it was an dumb play call and took all the blame. Everybody agrees was a dumb play call. Klein and Elko's wives in bed that night likely nagged them about how dumb it was. How much longer posters on TexAgs continue criticizing it as a dumb play call is TBD however.

He had an option and the kid made a bad decision. And the coaches agree they got too cute and should not have put that freshman RB in that position to begin with. End of story.

When did they stop making running backs this size?

I guess the next time we are inside the 5 and Klein just runs multiple times into the middle of the line I won't complain...
...too much.

I thought Elko only called the defense.

He can veto any play call and easily could have told Klein. No, call a power run play.

He's done it in the past.

The head coach makes all kinds of decisions. Kinda like he is in charge of the whole team or something.

Elko does call only defense. But he has a headset on and he knows what Klein is calling. If he thinks it's a mistake, he can cancel it.
