Room for Improvement:

1. Red Zone:
#16 Opponent Red Zone Conversions- 100% Scoring (Zero stops)

On the positive side, Opponents rarely get in to our Red Zone.
#3 in Opponents Red Zone Attempts - 16 Attempts in Red Zone.
#6 in TDs Allowed in Red Zone - 11 TDs

2. Interceptions
#16 in Interceptions - 1 INT

IMO, the third down defense has been the singularly most impressive aspect of this team, and that's crazy given the impact of KC and Craver, a gelled OL, and Reed greatly improving his intermediate accuracy.

I concur. Nationally, including ALL GAMES, Aggies Defense is #1 in Nation in Opponent 3rd Down Conversions at 24.11%. That is crazy good over an extended amount of games. They play like a pack of wild dogs on 3rd down!

Don't tell that to Mack Rhoades. Apparently the defense is the differentiator when compared to tOSU and Indiana.

More likely that we did well on 1st and 2nd down making for more 3rd and long situations. Would like to see a stat on opponents avg yds to gain on 3rd down.

It is kind of crazy that we only have two INTs this season and none by the DBs. I'm guessing that changes in these last three games.

The DBs, more specifically the CBs, never look for the ball. They usually are in good position to defend the pass but they will never get an interception unless the ball gets stuck in the back of their helmet.

ssssshhhhhh don't tell elko and the aggie defense they are any good. don't forget our defense is not good and that's why we aren't in the top 2.

I would like to see those stats compared to some of Bama's numbers when their defenses were lights out under Saban or how they compare to some of those Nebraska black shirt defenses. Those would be some interesting comparisons.

I really don't understand how we don't force more turnovers with the amount of pressure that we get. I think some of it is that our DBs probably aren't coached as much to get interceptions but instead focus on the deflections, but it does seem odd we can "luck" into a few more. I think that we probably will just from a law of averages standpoint, and as we saw yesterday, it can really be a game changer with our style of offense.

Is it just me or don't y'all kind of agree that TOs have a significant amount of luck associated with them?

One thing I've noticed is that we have given up a lot of low leverage (i.e. non-impactful) points in the 4th quarter of games. Using ESPN win probability, go take a look at 4th quarter points given up when A&M a 99.9% win probability:

Missouri, 7 points
LSU, 7 points
Arkansas, 7 points
Mississippi St, 7 points
Utah St, 8 points
UTSA, 7 points

That is 43 low leverage points allowed, which accounts for ~20% of all points given up for the season. For raw defensive stats A&M has given up around 22.8 points per game which is around ~60th in the country. If you only look at non low leverage points per game that drop to 18.1 points per game. That would put you around ~20th in the country. Of course, that isn't totally fair as you would have to run the numbers again for all teams. Maybe my theory is wrong, and most teams have given up that many low leverage points, but that still seems like an outlier to me.

Our rushing vs 3rd down stats conflict. Normally, if a team was giving up rushing yards…. You'd expect them to give up a bunch of third downs. And that teams could pound the rock.

But A&M doesn't give up third downs. so the rush stats have less meaning.

I'd like to see these stats for tOSU and IU I know, they haven't played any SEC games

One other thing to add, SP+ advanced analytics ranks the defense at 18th nationally. They are certainly not a bad defense like the raw points per game stats would indicate.

Another interesting tidbit is that SP+ ranks the offense at 2nd nationally. Good balance on this team.
