Kickoff return should have been live ball, TD, right? Why was it blown dead?

Was it a fumble???? Looked like a live ball.

The ball is live after 10 yards but kicking team cannot unless the receiving team had possession and then fumbles.

Can't advance a fumble, muff or ball past 10 yards .. just recover

Only if it's caught and then fumbled. Pretty clear rules on this one

Yes in NCAA football (college rules), the kicking team can advance the ball and even score if the receiving team touches the kick but does not secure possession, and the ball remains live.

Rules for a muffed kickoff or punt

Muffed ball: A muff occurs when a player touches a loose ball (like a kickoff or punt) in an attempt to gain possession.
Kicking team recovery: If the receiving team muffs the ball, the kicking team can recover it.
No advancement: The kicking team cannot advance the ball once they recover it.
Ball is dead: The play ends, and the ball is dead at the spot where the kicking team recovers the muff.
Possession changes: The kicking team takes possession at the spot of recovery.

No, an NCAA football kicking team cannot advance a muffed kickoff. If the receiving team muffs the ball and the kicking team recovers it, the ball is dead, and possession changes to the kicking team at the spot of the recovery.

Muff vs. Fumble: It is crucial to distinguish a muff from a fumble. A muff is when a player touches the ball without securing possession. A fumble occurs after a player has already gained possession and then loses it.

Advancing a fumble: If the receiving team has possession and fumbles the ball, it is a live ball that can be advanced by either team.

Muffed ball recovery: If the kicking team recovers a muffed kickoff, the ball is dead, and they cannot advance it. They simply gain possession at the spot where they recovered the ball.

Dumb rule. What's the rationale? Almost as dumb as the offense losing possession and ball at 20 when offense fumbles through the end zone.

On both kickoffs and punts the kicking team CANNOT advance a muff. If receiving team gains possession and then fumbles that can be advanced.

That's the rule. Like it or not.

This.

It's like some people have never watched football before.

If the ball had gone over his hands, it's an A&M TD. Since he got a finger on it, it's a muff and can't be advanced. Only recovered and possessed.

Incorrect. If kicking team recovers the kick untouched, it is also down at the spot of recovery.

And they called it back to where he took possession. Exactly like tonight only this was a pooch kick with a weird bounce and not an onside kick.

Just like basketball fans that always clamor for over the back fouls even though there is no rule for over the back.
