Per the ESPN article they are "negotiating" terms of his buyout (maybe the language is different but it does say "negotiating"), what is the negotiation, surely the terms are stipulated in the contract. Is it just how he will be paid? Or is the amount being discussed?

Asking because we obviously went through the same thing with Fisher and if LSU gets away paying less than the amount owed then we got swindled.

My guess is LSU doesn't have that kind of coin in the coffers therefore an installment plan over x years which will be more than a lump sum value today is what's being negotiated.

He's a jerk and LSU isn't afraid to play in the mud. So who knows what's happening behind closed doors?
Maybe LSU wants to claim "fired for cause" and then is willing to drag it out in court even if it's a losing case.

The contract has a mitigation clause where, if he gets another job, they pay less (per media reports). So there isn't actually a number that is certain, but at the same time, question how motivated people will really be to actually find another job if they don't make any more money unless they get a bigger salary than LSU. So both sides have an incentive to agree to a final number now and just go on their merry way.

It is interesting to me that "cause" in these football contracts has nothing to do with being a bad football coach.

Per multiple "insiders":

1. Kelly's buyout is tied to future employment. The more he earns, the less he receives.

2. This is a decision happening at the governor's level with several major La stakeholders involved.

3. Kelly could receive a negotiated sum up front and be done with both the employment ties and Baton Rogue.

4. Kelly could fight for his full buyout and go through all the hoops that fight would entail.

In the end, losing a few million may be worth the peace of a full break from Louisiana.

Here's to hoping Kelly and LSU both get screwed.

Every month they owe him salary times percentage guaranteed divided by number of months remaining in the contract at the time of firing.

Unless they have some scandal they're going to unleash on him (i.e. blackmail), the terms are already set.

I can't imagine they would choose a lump sum over monthly installments.

IMO - Something needs to change w/ Universities having some backbone, someone needs to start telling Jimmy Sexton no when it comes to these guaranteed contracts and maybe let one of these big names walk.

I think he would have to lose more than a few million. I bet there is a pretty low ceiling on what LSU could muster in a lump sum considering they are going to have to pay a new coach and find $18-20M to build a new roster. Their only saving grace seems like it's their ability to pay the buyout in monthly chunks instead of a lump sum.

By the way Orgeron insisted on his full buyout and got it. Unless LSU can fire BK for cause I don't see why he would take a penny less than he is owed.

I just looked it up. Orgeron's buyout was 18 payments front loaded over four years. So LSU owes Ed his last payment of $426k this year in December, in addition to the BK and new coach money.

Orgeron's wife successfully sued him for $8M of his $16.9M.

LSU's contract with BK runs through 2030. That's a lot of money to fork out every year.

Has to do with BK wanting to continue to coach moving forward. Maybe they can get that ~$50M down to $30M and let him take any job desired moving forward.

Seems it could get ugly if he takes the contract buyout....and has no job. But then accepts a job at the end of this season.

Think this is the basis of the negotiation so they can part ways cleanly and not continue to be tied together.
