When compared to other dual threat QBs, he doesn't seem to have the same break-away speed or shiftiness. He's been caught from behind trying to escape the pocket more than a few times this year. I'm open to having my mind changed, but he just doesn't seem like a significant running threat.

(I still think he's a good QB.)

He would've had a 60+ yard td run last week if not for a bogus call. I didn't realize he wasn't fast. I will send thank you letters to Arkansas for taking it easy on him.

The times I've seen him caught from behind escaping the pocket was because he was keeping his eyes downfield in hopes to still make a throw. When he's committed to the run he's looked pretty fast.

Fast enough.

His spins out of the pocket are lighting fast. His top stride speed, however, is okay, not elite.

He's twitchy which is more important than top end speed

Change of direction speed is pretty elite.

Not as escapable as Johnny. Not a breakaway like McNeil.

But the closest to those two we've had.

Someone please post the Florida juke last year and put this thread to bed.

I think his hesitation at times makes him appear slower.

Johnny had a knack for taking off before it was clear that he was making the right decision. Reed seems to take off after it's clear that he should have already started to scramble downfield.

I'm hopeful more experience leads to an improvement.

Or, maybe he has been coached to stay in the pocket and run as a last resort, and protect himself instead of being reckless…

I'll let the OP in on a little secret. If you can break a single run in an SEC game you are pretty fast. If you can break MANY like Reed you are fast and elusive.

Yea he looks quick and has more top end speed than I thought. That long run last week against Arkansas shows he has another gear if he wants it. He just has more of a track body so if he touched, he will go down

Agreed. Long distance speed is not elite. But he has elite quickness and is crazy shifty and brakes ankles. Take that any day of the week over straight line speed.

I personally feel Reed is one of the shifty / twitchy QBs in college today.

I dont understand people who say Reed is very inaccurate. He is generally VERY accurate. Has he missed some big throws? Yes. But his accuracy is also improving along with his comfort in the pocket.

He is definitely taught to not run too much to avoid injury. He is still really quick and has a lot of top end speed. But you can tell he like to run towards the sidelines to get out of bounds which is fine.

Reed is probably as fast as Manziel was. Same sort of threat. Maybe not as good at reacting and making a play under pressure or on the move as Manziel.

He has a great lateral juke. I know he has done it a few times this year but last year vs Florida he dang near broke someone's ankles with a lateral move. A quick google search found some videos of it.

He's so fast he makes fast people look not fast……….

Idk I think JFF was faster and had better acceleration. Though it may just appear that way because Johnny fully committed when he took off whereas Reed looks like he second guesses.

Saw Reed on campus and I told him he didn't look all that fast and he said the same thing about me. I said I am faster than you, he said am not, I said am, he said am not, I said am, he said am not. Finally he challenged me to a race, 40 yard distance.

I set down my large pizza box (could have just carried it since I had eaten six of the eight slices so it wasn't all that heavy) and told him let's get the show on the road as I had a couple gallons of ice cream in my bag and didn't want it to melt. So we lined up and I stomped a mudhole in him. He wanted to time me, did, and said he had never seen anyone run a 2.9 in the 40 and I said yeah, I haven't either cause when you run that fast you have vision loss.

He's faster than Spencer Nealy. Slower than Bethel Johnson.

Supposedly Marcel was clocked at 21mph during one of his runs against Arkansas. If true, that is fast!!!
