The last time the Notre Dame football team played a game that was not televised was November 17, 1990, against Penn State, which was a home game on campus that was broadcast locally.

I can't imagine why a home game in 1990 wouldn't have been on NBC. I never thought I'd see broadcast TV pass on the Domers. I know NBC is pushing Peacock hard, but I have Hulu + Live TV. I'm not paying any more than I already do, and I'm sure not paying for NBC. If I were a Domer fan, I'd be pissed.

EDIT - Apparently NBC's deal with Notre Dame didn't start until 1991. I'd thought it was earlier than that.

I hate that they've started forcing people's hand like this. If it were A&M in this situation, I'd be livid.

The beauty is that someone in Vietnam will be broadcasting a pirated stream on YouTube. You can watch any game without a cable subscription if you're willing to forego a few viewing perks.

A&M is in this situation. Ever since our new ESPN/SEC tv deal began we have one home game per year that is exclusive to ESPN+

Exactly. I have the subscription, but logging in is so complicated compared to just changing the channel. A potential move to Apple streaming is what killed the Pac-12. Most people won't watch those games.

Wasn't our game with them on Peacock

It was available on Peacock but it wasn't exclusive to Peacock. It was also broadcast nationally on NBC

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure if you have a tv sub that includes ESPN, you'll be able to watch the game. Any smart tv will have the espn app. I do agree it's more of a pain in the ass to have to login than just change the channel.

But with the ND situation, it sounds like even if you have a tv package with NBC, you'd still have to pay more money for peacock in order to watch the game.

I know its hurt the viewing numbers for MLS matches as the casual sports viewer isnt going to pop open their Apple TV+ app to see if sports are on.

At least in the SEC's ESPN+ setup its always been a non-conf cupcake game so its essentially one that no one would have tuned in to watch except the fans of the teams playing. In the past that game would have either been on PPV or available only on SECNetwork+. I know we'd be pissed if we had a conference game exclusive to a online streamer.

But the SEC stream is free of charge to anyone already paying for the ESPN package of channels. NBC is trying to get me to pay extra for a stream. It isn't the same situation.

For some reason I thought the ESPN+ game wasn't also available on SECNetwork+.

Pretty sure it's on SECN+, so if you have sec as part of your plan then you can stream it. I've never had espn+, but I've never had an issue watching an A&M game.

So NBC overpaid for exclusive TV rights and ND fans who brag about having their special TV deal are mad that NBC is using those rights to get people to subscribe to Peacock. With all due respect they can jump in a lake.

And this is exactly why piracy is on the rise. Most people are willing to pay for legality and convenience, but too many companies are now focused more on exploiting copyrights than ensuring customer satisfaction. When there is an alternative, and that alternative is free, you can only make your product so crappy before people just give up.

Gabe Newell has been spot on in identifying this as a key part of his company's business model.

They also make money hand over fist while still being close to a de facto monopoly. These tv execs are sucking dry that last bit of value in live sports and now piracy is easier, better quality, and more ubiquitous than ever. It will be funny to see how this all shakes out.

Most steaming services like Hulu and YTTV will have major events on ESPN+ or SECN+ listed in their guide and accessae through the main streaming all without going to ESPN+, 100% I know it is that way for Hulu.

ESPN+ is available in a Hulu/Disney bundle with no extra charge.

For ND fans the difference is Peacock is 100% a stand-alone stream service, though I think you can add a sub via Amazon Prime video.

There's been a Peacock exclusive every weekend this season, but this is the first time that it's been Notre Dame. They're the last school I'd expect to see this pulled on.

You're a year late on this OP. Last yrs ND vs Louisville was also only on Peacock. Either the AI is wrong or the search request needed a little tuning.

Looks like in 2023 same thing with the Central Michigan game. So change that to 2 yrs late.
