Feels like we're due and I see Lagway getting careless playing on the road.

They can score in every game. The question you should be asking is "will they?"

Haven't seen a wrecking crew around these parts in years . Would be nice to see one but I don't think it's possible the way the game is officiated now.

I think it's interesting how "Wrecking Crew" thrown around

If you witnessed the WC - you'd know we not that level - yet

Agree. But getting there.

I think the one aspect that is still missing is being CONSISTENTLY ELITE. We have been elite on individual plays, even quarters, but we haven't been at that level for even a full game yet, much less a season or multiple seasons.

Still, it's been very exciting to see that level of defense. Can't wait to see more.

What part of the last two games was not elite?

Auburn: The extended drive for their field goal and the explosive play touchdown.

MSU: Their drive from their own 11 to our 1 which thankfully ended in a field goal and again, an explosive play for a touchdown.

The last two games have been fun but the WC, and their precursor in the 70s saw a defense that could keep teams to negative yardage for an entire half and under 100 yards for the entire game.

Still, not complaining. Let's stack up more performances like the last two to make it a season of this level of defense.

Lagway when pressured turns it over. I think we can strip sack him for a TD

You'll never see that again with modern offenses.
I was around for the 90's version of the WC. What we've seen this season is getting close given the changes in the game.
Our 3rd down defense numbers in SEC play is nearly incomprehensible. Something like 1/24.

What the hell is the point of forming a moniker that defines a team if the team is never worthy of earning that moniker again by grumpy old men?!?

One could better argue that based on the state of game today you witnessed the wrecking crew against both Auburn and Miss. State. Failing to acknowledge it out of spite isn't a knock on this team, but on you. Nothing good comes from it. It actually means more respect for the teams 40 years ago, not less that these kids aspire to live up to it.

So why not trying to embrace it and see the positive that can come from it.

#21 total defense
#33 passing defense
#32 rushing defense
#5 in defensive 3rd down efficiency

50 years ago isn't and shouldn't be the same standard for today's game. It's not comparable due to the rule changes in the name of safety and the completely different offenses of today.

The most passing yards in a season by ANY QB in the 1970s was 1976 Gifford Nielsen BYU WAC 3,401. The average passing leader in the 1970's onl through for 2,900 yards in the entire season.

6 games out of a possible 15 or 16 games to win the championship and the passing leaders are already at 2,000 yards. Comparing the defense today to those defenses is not only a joke, but a disservice to A&M football.

I agree we won't see something like the WC or the 75 team. We have the makings of an elite defense. I would like to see it consistently and be able to count on it week-in and week-out, no matter the team we face or the offense they run.

A good example is the 75 team (at least the first 10 games). They averaged giving up less than a TD (+XP) per game (6.6 points) until tu had a punt return for a TD (which I don't count against the D). They had two shutouts (Ole Miss and K-State) and the most points they gave up in that 10 run stretch was 14 to Rice.

Here are the opponents TOTAL YARDS for each game and the final score:

Ole Miss 82 -- 7-0
LSU 114 -- 39-8
Illinois 224 -- 43-13
K-State 129 -- 10-0
Tech 320 -- 38-9
TCU 145 -- 14-6
Baylor 173 -- 19-10
SMU 203 -- 36-3
Rice 186 -- 33-14
tu 179 -- 20-10

I would love for our defense to score a touchdown. Our defense has smothered our last two SEC opponents.

Auburn: 177 total yards (125 passing and 52 rushing) and 10 points allowed with their only touchdown coming off of an interception return to our 2-yard line, and 0/13 on third downs

Mississippi State: 219 total yards (142 passing and 77 rushing) and 9 points allowed with their only touchdown coming with 1:20 left, and 1/10 on third downs

Exactly, it's very rare to hold an opponent to under 100 yards in the 2020s. Yes, we have allowed just 1/23 third down conversion attempts in SEC play, and that is unfathomable.

Auburn: 0/13
Mississippi State: 1/10

If the defense were about to score a touchdown, some old Ag would jump out of the stands and tackle them in the name of gatekeeping the Wrecking Crew name.

It's a different era of football

eta: y'all are holding this elite defense to a standard that the original wrecking crew could never obtain in today's football. It's mind numbing how fragile some of you (not OP or poster I'm replying to) are when it comes to an A&M brand.

etax2: similar with Nebraska black shirts, A&M Maroon Goons, these are brands. Use them or lose them.

It's hard to replicate what our defense looked like (albeit very good defense) when playing 80s-90s football offenses in conference games with the likes of Rice, TCU and Baylor.

The game and environments change but the passion and emphasis on a stout defense remains. Don't let any gatekeeping stop anyone from using or chanting Wrecking Crew, imo.

It can only help us show our support and desire for a high performing defense.

Disagree. Wholeheartedly.

"Wrecking Crew" is a state of mind, not a badge or honor bestowed. Thats just some BS Aggies made up. This isnt even the same game as when that moniker was made. It was still an amateur sport in that day. We are from that in this era.

No no, flying to the ball, going multiple games with only a single conversion on 3rd/4th down, forcing turnovers, topping out some of the notable defensive statistics in conference. All these things are not qualifications for a name; but an attitude consistent with the spirit of the Wrecking Crew.

And damn it…if we love anything, it's spirit.

I've been watching since…*checks notes…1987. I used to think Jackie Sherrill was my dad's ('77) boss.

Spoiler Alert: he wasn't

I've gone through being excited about our offense (Dickey, Leland, JFF, etc) and squads that featured defensive standouts like Ray Mickens, Dat, many others…

Right now I think we're close to having put it all together. Or at least enough to be a threat against anyone.

I put $150 on the Wrecking Crew to score a defensive TD tomorrow night. I got a feeling. Either way I know this post will be bookmarked. Lol.

i think this defense is pretty damn good. and if they can continue playing at this level they will have earned any nick name peole want to give them.

that said this defense, the speed they play with, and size and stature of the players reminds me of defenses from LSU. clearly that is the moffitt effect becise our defensive players are built like the great defenses LSU has had over the years.

Until we see multiple possessions on defense for the below, withhold the moniker and just enjoy:

3rd and 15

The offenses from those eras were not as prolific. If our def continues to put up stats like it did the last two games we will not only have the best def in the country, we will win the natty.
