Running game was horrific. Reed played great, defense was mediocre but wont win many games with a putrid running gsme. O line has a lot of experience. What's the deal?

It didn't really seem like Klein even tried to establish run. Time will tell.

We ran the ball 13 times with our RBs.

I'm guessing they were working on the passing game.

They were working Moss in slowly.

Once again, this team will go as Moss goes, because A&M does not look to have too much of a running game without him. If he's out there, this team can control the clock and keep the A&M defense from losing games. However, if the A&M defense is this putrid against the run, none of that will matter anyways.

our main two running backs averaged nearly 7 yds per carry on very few attempts not sure where this is going

You guys would ***** and moan if Moss and Owens carried the ball 40 times and we never threw the ball to our receivers

Were we perfect ? Hardly but i have no issue with the game plan against them and a game plan against Utah State if we dont show anything for Notre Dame

Honestly I don't care that much about running the ball or not against UTSA. The biggest concern coming out of this game is our inability to stop the run, and there is not a close second.

Like the two new guys who combined for nearly 200 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns, and added another 94 punt return yards for a touchdown? You're either desperately reaching for reasons to be miserable, or just plain dumb. More likely both. Don't try to spin this about HS either.

Clearly the goal was to keep people healthy and not do more than you have to. I liked the approach. Last thing we needed is for Moss to get hurt vs tuSA

Just an FYI

IMO UTSA was loading the box to prevent the run and it was apparently their game plan, make Reed beat them by passing the ball.
The coaches won't probably admit this, but I thought they purposely held back Moss from a full work horse load….trying to save him from potential re-injury and allowing a slow transition back into full game time speed…..

We also didn't use Reeds legs in the run game or the passing game. Everything was straight hand offs and simple drop back passes.

Almost as if we were trying to work on our basics and not show our full offense or risk hurting our best players for a lesser opponent.

If you read our football board, you should know we are intentionally keeping our highly balanced running and passing offense subdued and very vanilla until we go into South Bend and play the Golden Domers!

It's part of lulling them into a false sense of security!

I think this is likely if you are UTSA you are going to try and make Reed beat you with his arm
Also it seems likely that Elko was trying to force UTSA into running the ball. Usually coaches will take what the other team gives you.

tbis is the answer. our offense will be fine and our running game will be what most expected this season but we have got to do a better job with our run fits and containment. that looked eaily similar to last season on run defense. i think our pass defense has a chance to be much improved but we can't give up 10 yards a carry. or teams in the sec will literally run it right down our throats. period and end of story.

I kinda think they were trying to showcase the passing game as well and limit moss and Owen's carries ti start the season and give other teams tape to prove they have to worry about our passing game we have

There were ALOT of RPO calls that Reed took the pass option. And we then talk about how great Craver and KC and the WRs looked.

Yards are yards. Don't be upset that we worked on things and showed flashes of things we couldn't do last season.

We have not had WRs like Craver and KC in a long while, probably since Evans or Kirk. Noah Thomas was decent, but you see now he was just the best of an average group.

Stewart had a ton of potential but was/is soft and injury prone.

We had receivers that got separation

Can they do that against top SEC defenses ? Time will tell but i dont remember getting separation with previous few years of "talent" even in these "buy" games

I wasn't in a position to really hone in on the game but our top two backs had 8 carries for 56 yards. The stats indicate we simply didn't try to run the ball.

As for rushing defense, it looked Batemanesque. Good for a couple of downs then get gashed for a chunk play. There's something wrong with a scheme or effort when guys break the LOS and don't even have to make a move for the next 20 yards.

But but but…working on the basics doesn't make us feel good….we want to score 70! We're so insecure we need something to latch on to!

Our running game is fine. This game was focusing on new receiver Corp.

Listening to post game press conference and Coach Elko mentioned that UTSA stacked the box a lot..
Apparently a lot of offensive play calls were RPO's. Marcel made good reads and torched their ass.

I haven't watched replay yet to see it with my own eyes, but that was Coach's explanation

uh why? We had an 8 catch 100plus yd WR. QB scored What's the difference between any other school

Maybe the OL weren't really challenged by the DL we have now in the offseason?

Last year it was why would any WR want to come here because we can't throw the ball. Now it's why would any HB want to come here because we can't run the ball. After one game.
