I get that the Sooners got new OC and the QB transfer duo, but they were BAD last year. Defense and OL were BAD!
Why are they on everyone's sleeper radar? Their O/U win total is 6.5! 6.5!!!
They're average at best. At worst, Venables is gone mid-way through the year and yet I have heard people talking about how they could possibly win the SEC! HA!

Its hard to say just how much these sorts of pre season discussions do no matter

They don't matter at all.
Just makes you wonder how much these people with microphones actually know.
Personally, I think it is an easy way to show a long shot that magically goes over 6... To show what an expert they are...
But, when it crashes out, they will say "oh, well - it was Venables" or "injuries" or "they weren't expected to do much anyways..."

Just dumb.

Last year zero u. started a freshman qb and 4 or 5 of their top receivers were injured.
They also had O line injuries.
Along with UF, had the hardest schedule in the SEC.
Their D was not that bad....ask bama.
Yes, Venebels is on the hot seat
O/U at 6.5 will be a challenge with the schedule they have this year.

Sounds like a pretty normal year for us, Aggies.

It's going to work out so well for them until it doesn't.

The defense was not bad last year. They ranked 19 in the country in yards allowed per game, T10 in offensive TDs allowed, T3 in defensive TDs scored. Admittedly they were weak in the redzone, allowing points on 81.6% of opponents red zone trips (top 10 range anywhere from 60%-72%). The defense was actually one of the better defenses OU has had in a long time, and the general consensus is Venables will have good defenses going forward.

What cost OU so many games was juggling QBs and Seth Littrell's terrible offense. In their losses, they scored 15, 3, 9, 23, 17, 20 points. Littrell was fired after a 35-9 loss to South Carolina.

I personally think they will outperform expectations with Arbuckle and Mateer coming into the fold. They should be very competitive, but have a tough schedule. They'll probably be undefeated heading into Dallas to play Texas, but after Texas they have South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Bama, and LSU. All will be tough games.

Very possible. It could be a total disaster. They are already falling behind in recruiting, and I don't think they are just flush with cash. They need to have a good season or it could turn ugly quick.

OU has a well run athletic department and football program. They also had a slew of injuries last year. They won't be down for long.

Entirely possible that they will be though and that's really going to set them back quite a bit.

You can be well run and still get flattened in this conference if you don't have the talent to keep up.

OU is going to wind up like Arkansas and Nebraska. They don't have the resources nor the appeal. And frankly they deserve it for riding texas' coattails into the toughest conference in the country

How can you possibly compare Mateer to JFF?

They'll be fine because they're basically a Texas college for HS talent, as well as getting great media coverage. Arkansas lost Texas ties for decades. They've got an even smaller state than Oklahoma does. Nebraska is done. They're basically Minnesota now, a team that won titles from a bygone era and it's never coming back.

They do have Michigan and Auburn coming to Norman before they play Texas so it's quite possible they could have at least 1 loss, maybe even 2 by the time they play Texas

Yeah this is basically just a bunch of "experts" jerking themselves raw over Mateer. They'll be better. But not conference champ material

Its talking season. What do you expect????

Hell, a lot of folks on here are convinced by staff and posters that the Ags are gonna be in the mix for conference championship year-end and year-out when history says we will be 8-4, 7-5 with an odd 5-7 or 9-3 thrown in every now and then.
I know nothing!

Possible, but I expect OU to beat both of those teams.

I think Oklahoma will finish 8-4 (4-4 SEC) with losses to Texas (neutral), South Carolina (away), Tennessee (away), and Alabama (away). Their tough games against Michigan, Auburn, Ole Miss, and LSU are all at home.

I agree with you. I think Oklahoma will head into Dallas with an undefeated 5-0 record with quality wins over Michigan and Auburn. After Texas, I think Oklahoma will have home wins over Ole Miss and LSU and road losses to South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama for an 8-4 finish.

OU was screwed over by Riley, who stole their best qb and other recruits and left them scrambling. That dug a hole that they are still trying to dig out of. Venables was waiting for this job for a long time, but I never saw him as a great head coach. This season will be an indicator. I remember them being pretty down in the 90's as well, until they went on a run. Those thinking they don't have money to compete are kidding themselves, and I imagine that they will return to many conversations soon.

If they fire him after this year he will have served a Mike Sherman term as the OU coach and he will have coached a 10 win team, something Sherman never achieved during his tenure.

They might, but I think the odds probably favor a split on those 2

Guess it just depends on what type of team OU has this season.

Maybe they'll lose 77-0 in one their games this year. Then we'll know they really suck.

That'll kinda, sorta exonerate TAMU, right?

77-0 would only happen if the team turned on their coach.

Like ours did against Fran.
