They didn't want Boise or ASU to make it to the final 4, so they gave them a bye managing they only had to win 1 game to make final 4

No doubt espn loves the final 4 matchups being all blue bloods, but your theory doesn't hold much water

The big issue in instituting the CFP was what to do about conference champions.

Some people REALLY like conference champs getting auto bids. I personally don't think any conference champs should get auto bids.

Right now, it's the highest ranked 5 conference champs. But there used to be the Power 5 - now there's pretty much Power 2. The ACC and Big 12 are crap.

Of course, the issue here - if you took the highest ranked 12 teams per the AP, ASU, SMU, Boise State and Indiana would have still made it. Alabama would have replaced Clemson, and we saw what Alabama was in their bowl game.

There would not be a 12 team playoff without autobids. The conferences would not have agreed to that format.

They likely fix the seeding issue for next year

I have no issue with auto bids, but that's all it should be, a ticket in. I have an issue with auto seeds. The seeding should be based on final ranking regardless of championship. Instead of trying to seed like the nfl, seed like March madness, where winning a CC gets you in but you can still be a low seed.

I have no issue with conference champs being auto bids but the seeding process and byes are no bueno.

Agreed. Sure give them a spot, but they should still seed them based on rankings.

No conference champion won even a single game in the playoffs, and the two teams that are in the final didn't play in a conference championship game.

Might be something to that.

Make the final week of the regular season a "flex" week. Top two play each other, but in doing so don't have to play an extra game. In conference rank- match up 3-4, 5-6 and so on...

The seeding is the real joke in all this.

I'm ok with the conference champs getting an auto-bid. But that shouldn't also get them a top 4 seed and a first round bye.
Once they've identified the 12, just seed them based on ranking and be done with it.

Even if you strip down the seeding. #5 in the rankings is in the championship game. #6 has looked like clearly the best team. We did already get, in year 1, confirmation that "you dont need more than four" whining was actually BS.
