#1 portal player overall now.

QB John Mateer, from Little Elm, TX. 2 years eligibility.

"Last season throwing for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns on 65% passing. He also ranked sixth among FBS starters with 827 rushing yards and scored 15 rushing touchdowns for the Cougars."

Sooners are biggest competition for him. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43008103/washington-state-qb-john-mateer-set-enter-transfer-portal

Not sure why you're following this dude. He's going with his OC to Oklahoma.

Because he looks great, and we'd make the playoffs with him easily. Probably be playing against him in the 2026 season otherwise.

One

We are done at QB. You might gain some peace if you are capable of accepting it.

Two

Many players already know where they are going once they announce entering the portal.

I think this guy is a bit overrated given some of his QBR ratings this season against some weaker competition at WSU

I feel like we only scratched the surface of Reed's potential. Get some better playmakers around him and some less predictable, mocre creative playcalling (not holding my breath), while working on his feet in the pocket and touch on certain passes, and he can do special things. Another year with the 1's and the entire unit might seem a little more fluid.

I'm not saying Reed will be Lamar Jackson. But his body style reminds me of Lamar's at the same age, maybe a little bit skinnier. And he has such a smooth throwing motion like Lamar did. Marcel has similar juking ability, but didn't seem to break very many this year which was a little weird given the raw athleticism. He did play against far better defenses than Jackson did early in his career. But it's not like Marcel was Haynes King running straight downhill with no ability to make guys miss, just always seemed to go down on shoestrings. Marcel has also shown the ability to throw on the run and from non-ideal arm slots.

It's insane. We literally have a long history of not being willing to develop a QB and giving up on them way too early, and people still think that's the recipe for success.

I think people are just tired of waiting for potential and want a proven starter.

For a good discussion. Here are the twelve teams in the playoffs and the QBs who transferred in last year vs been on the roster for multiple years

Indiana - transfer
Notre dame - transfer
Oregon - transfer
Ohio state - transfer
Arizona State - transfer

Tu - develop
UT - develop
BSU - develop
SMU - develop
Clemson - develop
PSU - develop
UGA - develop

There isn't a standout formula, but more teams in the playoffs have developed the starting qb rather than bought them for a year.

I'm bullish on him. I think he'll be a lot better with more consistent line play, another year of practice, and new play making ability at WR. That said, he didn't tear it up at qb this year, and you're always just one injury away from playing somebody else anyway, so the best approach is to get as much talent as will have you.

I was going to suggest we hire his coach instead but too late. We definitely would be ahead to hire someone to develop the position.

The OU coach got the job in part because they thought the QB would follow.

New automatic QB question for threads like this: can he make a yard on 4th down?

Op said "direct competition" . Are you saying we are in pursuit of this qb?

We are a decent / accurate dual threat qb away from 9:3 or 10:2 …a playoff contender

Never enough of good qbs - no matter Mercer is it or not

1 play away

Yeah - I was trying to separate the first year transfers from the qbs that developed in a system. Point being a lot of posters think an annual turnover at the position would be a good formula. I don't buy it

The portal will always be best used to grab key players and not roster turnover. Culture still matters and you can't build that with constant turnover. We will see teams pop up out of nowhere because of the portal (TCU a couple years ago) but I doubt we see longterm success at schools that use the portal heavily v
