If a QB is out of rhythm why not bring in the backup?
Why not give the starter a breather to get his head together, or see what he is doing, why keep him in the pressure cooker?

Only the old farts remember the days when QB's were pulled like a starting pitcher.

Morton Staubach
Hanraty Bradshaw
LaMonica Stabler

Seems like the new boss is the same as the old boss, I hope not.

It is annoying when a employee ( these football players are simply employees in todays NIL era) isn't performing the boss doesn't pull that employee out and put in another wjo is desperate to be given the chance to try his best

Last year both back ups did very well in their respective games and I was surprised that CW was given the spot so easily and freely it seems

I think they are so concerned about placating the 5 stars so they don't risk not getting future 5 stars that it affects their decision making. Also think about the pressure to please the BMA that is sponsoring that big NIL deal for the 5 star QB and also funding much of the coaching contract stuff. You think he is wants to see his horse pulled from the race? I think that's part of it, honestly.

Probably because it was a very close game and it's easy to convince yourself that the guy you have been prepping all offseason is going to find his groove. In hindsight, he never did.

I can see that…well then this college league may just become as boring as the NFL

when they are guaranteed a paid position, the effort drops off

First, I agree that Conner was so confused in this game a change was justified.

Reasons this was a tricky one and not as clear cut as us fans think.

Known
Game 1
Game was close until the end
Weigman was different than last year. Maybe he snaps out of it.

Unknown
How prepared was the backup.

Just my guess but it being the first game and no one expecting him to play that bad, our coaches were not sure what to do.

Its just weird how every position looked better on offense from last year except for one. And that one actually digressed. Makes no sense.

The hard part to swallow is if we had just one sustained drive at the end, it seemed we could have won.

He went four and out on that last drive

The drive before that, unfortunately, moss ran out of bounds inches before the first down marker

Because QBs now are delicate flowers and the if they don't feel supported and coddled, they do worse.

lol saban benched Milroe last year just to make the fans stfu as they almost lost to usf, it was incredibly obvious why it was Milroes job

I don't know why fans always assume #2 is close to #1.

Could be that there is actual evidence from last year that both of the guys behind Connor can play.

Yeah but we all watched Henderson and Reed play last year and they both looked good and played with some fire. So they weren't so bad that giving them a shot would have been out of left field.

Saban would have pulled Weigman in the second half. Elko doesn't understand offense

That's not what Saban would have done at all. What Saban actually did in this situation was gave the next game to the backup to see what he can do.

You say this. But Saban actually did not pull Milroe during the game against Texas that they ended up losing. Even though he already had concerns.

I'm probably showing my old age here but back in the day there was this coach at Tech that used to get lower rated recruits that could throw accurate passes very consistently.

We seem to do the opposite.

Maybe we suck at hiring coaches.

Saban would never switch QBs in the middle of a game!!11!!!1!!!
TyperWoods

Because it was a close game and they thought Weigman gave us the best chance to win, probably due to practice reps.

Plus we had a backup center.

Exactly. This QB contest was called way too quickly. Weigman doesn't have a much larger resume than either of the other two and has almost zero "skins on the wall".

Should have put Marcel Reed into game in 3rd quarter and we would have won.

I don't care whose feelings get hurt after over 4 decades of supporting the team. We are very overdue to start winning big games consistently.

One reason they don't pull the starter is limited practice time. QB2 does not get many reps and practice is important in football

except to win the national title

e.g. Tua replaced Hurts at halftime...and the Tide took home the trophy

Apples and oranges situation.

As already noted. In a similar situation just last year. He did not.

Not all coaches will refuse to pull the starting QB……

"With Alabama trailing Georgia 13-0 in the national-title game for the 2017 season, Saban pulled Hurts at halftime for Tagovailoa, who rallied the Crimson Tide to a 26-23 overtime victory, throwing a 41-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith to win the game."

"Nick Saban saw what everybody saw in the first half. They had no faith in Hurts to pass, and when he was called on to pass, he wasn't effective."

"The following day, Saban explained his decision to bench Hurts for Tagovailoa, saying the offense needed a spark, which the freshman could provide with his passing acuity."

Could've easily been done in our opener against Notre Dame!

This week and in GM2 staff should split snaps 50/50 CW/MR.
GM2 plan should be CW 1Q/3Q and MR 2Q/4Q that way its a true measure of ability. Yes, more difficult to find a rhythm but playing by first half and 2nd half allows for defrmsive adjustments. I want to see who is moving the ball better and who looks in control.

We can't judge a great WK2 CW performance as a sign for the remainder of the season. We need to know that if a ND type performance is happening later in conference play we can make the switch.

well, if our #2 isn't close to our #1...... we're in a lot more trouble than losing to ND; we're likely to lose many more.

It seemed pretty clear after our first possession in the 3rd quarter that he wasn't going to flip the on switch.

You are exactly right. The no 2 guy rarely gets any reps with the number ones

We have seen all 3 qb's, wiegman should have been pulled. Even if it was just for a series. Henderson and Reed have both looked better than what we were seeing from cw.
