I checked this book out from the library and I'd recommend it if you are interested in some Aggie football history. This book specifically is about a riot at halftime of the 1926 Baylor-A&M game that resulted in one of the cadets being hit in the head with a chair leg and murdered. The case remains unsolved though the evidence pointed to a family member of Wacos mayor. Interestingly, Baylor was our biggest rival at the time and the tu-A&M rivalry took off because Baylor refused to play us for five years following the riot.

Interesting. I didn't know we had branded their bear 13-0 fifteen years before 1926.

Or that we had started playing them before the sips.

I'm pretty sure that was the game when the A&M Cadets loaded up a Howitzer and were headed to Waco for revenge.

It almost turned out really deadly, from what I've heard from different Ags.

I've stated this on numerous times on other threads. If I could wave my magic maroon wand and get rid of two things it would be this fool story and squeezing. I'm old enough to have known and discussed this with several Aggies from classes in the 1920's. To a man they all denied it ever happened. They also reminded me that stealing artillery from an arsenal and commandeering a freight train are not good bull college pranks. They don't give you rams for that and let you walk them off Saturday morning in the Bull Ring. No, you go to prison for a long time.

Now, just think if this story had gone to fruition. The Aggies turn a howitzer loose on Baylor. That's called first degree murder. If that happened, there's a good chance there would be no Corps of Cadets, and maybe no Texas A&M. At the very least, this would have been something generations of Aggies would have had to live down for the last 100 years. It never happened, let it go.

Squeezing only works if everyone does it. The last time that happened was 1939.

We played them more frequently due to location. The Baylor A&M game was the premier SWC matchup. Texas was a big game but it didn't hold the weight the Baylor game did.

I'm going to imagine some tough talking and angry rants became hyperbolic over time. "We should do X, they would deserve it" became "we tried to do X but got stopped or we would have".

Murdered by a chair leg and murderer still at large. Anyone question Ron Artest?

The way I've always imagined it, was 3 or 4 Aggies that were at the game had a little too much of the grape a few days later and jumped in a pick-up with a .22 in the gunrack and headed for Waco to exact some revenge. They got stopped for speeding outside of Calvert and decided to go back to A&M.

The story gets told and retold and by the time I'm a fish forty years later, the howitzer and train stories are damn near gospel.

You should read the book, it is great read written by a real historian.

Does the book show the evidence that cadets took a howitzer, commandeered a freight train and were headed for Waco?

It doesn't but it does tell the story of them arming themselves and heading to Waco. The Texas Rangers had to intervene.

So the truth is like most things in the middle…overall a great book, highly recommend.

A little follow up on this:

1. I understand that Sessum's father tried to keep this alive in the courts for some time but ultimately to no avail.

2. This story kind of dropped out of the news because a few months later, most if not all, of the Baylor basketball
was killed when their bus was hit by a train on their way to Austin to play t.u.

3. For the next 80 plus year Aggies could tell the story about the fight at the Baylor game while they were at A&M.
Mine was at GRW spring of '69.
