On Defense? I know every coach that is about to get fired usually has someone else calling offensive plays for him his last season, but I can't think of any head coach forced to give up calling plays on defense. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not sure what you're asking but Elko is an example of a defensive HC that delegates play-calling to his DC.

*which, given that it's Bateman has me worried

DeMeco Ryan's went from DC to HC. Matt Burke was Texans DC this year.

You know how Jimbo always called the offense, because he was an offense guy? And then he got play calling pulled from him the last season?

I'm asking for an example of the exacts same situation, but the coach is a defensive minded guy losing playcalling duties on the other side of the ball.

Gotchya. Yea it's an interesting topic.

I wonder where the reverse of that has happened.
Defensive HC's DC is doing poorly and so the HC takes over.

When you're dictating how your head coach coaches, you have the wrong guy. And the wrong ownership structure.

I'm pretty sure Meco still calls the defensive plays. He was doing it all year.

As far as Elko, he has focused on being the head coach at Duke and here. I agree with this approach in the college game with all the extra responsibilities they have now.

If the defensive side sucks then elko is to blame.

Elko already said it will be his defensive scheme and Bateman will be in charge of calling the plays.

I think Charlie Strong kind of did that. Didn't fix things.

That's still a problem. Elko's a top defensive mind in cfb. Right behind Kirby.
But Jay Bateman is still choosing plays even though they are Elko's. And choosing personnel. And coaching LBs.

Bateman has not been good at any of those 3 things for a while.

Bateman has been trying to win car races with a Ford Focus. Now he has a Lambo.

There's a big f**"in difference.

This line of thinking is very overused. You can get any coach that has done poorly and insert "well we have more talent here so he'll be better".

You want assistant coaches that have shown to develop players and done more with less.

That's exactly what he did at Army.

I do not even know who called the defense at North Carolina. The whole time he was there, he was Co-DC and he only coached LBs at Florida.
