It's pretty amazing that with the trillions of data points out there, they can't count that the vast majority of views are 4 fingers and one thumb, but probably lots of the picture show hands closed or only partially, and held in different positions, and it can't pattern them reliably as a 2D image. It's not considering the 3D spatial representation at all, just an analysis of the rules of all the 2D images it reviews. They're not very smart AI's, just more of image pattern analysis and amalgamation engines.

Hands are the most difficult part of a portrait to get right. The most common critique of new "da Vinci" painting was that the hands weren't right. They're what separate a Rembrandt from a Jimbo.

That's exactly it. Image generators just don't know what a hand is. They simply learn the patterns around pictures of hands and create approximations. There's lots of confusing things in training pictures, though, like intertwined hands, fists, people holding things, hands turned a certain way, etc. There's a lot more nuance there than most image generators can pick up on given their training sets. Part of the problem is that they pick up on things that aren't there.
