How would you structure the next coach's contract?

Let us assume that you are the AD or whoever does this. What do you think is the right structure? Keep in mind that the goal is to attract top talent so we need to pay up for that. If you overpay, then we may get someone who thinks of this job as a retirement gig and just coast through. So we need to get to the right point where the coach is motivated to win and A&M can make the change if things don't work out.

hire a younger coach with something to prove that will not demand such a huge salary, then give him a good base of 4-5 million and add in incentives for making a bowl game, winning a bowl game, winning 10 games, making conference championship game, winning the conference, making the playoffs, winning a playoff game, making the natty game, winning the natty game etc...

I would structure the contract on Hammermill Printer Paper, 8.5 x 14 - 92 Bright

it's not the initial contract...

it's the extension that's the killer

Big money, loaded with performance based incentives. Probably not something a big time candidate would accept, but going the opposite direction hasn't seemed to serve y'all too well.

^ This, with a 4 yr contract cancellable anytime after year 2.

Depends on who the coach is. If the coach has already won a natty, basically the same thing we gave Jimbo but with only 50% guaranteed. No extension would be considered until there are 4 years or fewer left on the contract.

Since I'm NOT willing to commit to, and risk, paying 10X my current ticket prices if our coach wins a natty, I will not spend other people's money by advocating for an incentive-based contract when I'm not willing to pay may fair share.

Same as this contract.

Other people's money so I don't have to care !

If it isn't your money, why do you care ?

I think they should pay more per year than anyone else if it will get a big name but only guarantee the first 3 years of the contract. Pay more but guarantee less and if they do well keep that pattern going.

There is no reason to sign a contract where you owe a guy 50, 60, or 70 million after firing him for sucking.

You go in with a 7 year deal and reevaluate after 3 years. Also, if you can, put a separate buyout clause in there. No fully guaranteed contract. Coaches always want at least 4 years on their deal for recruiting purposes. Depending on who you hire money can vary greatly.

Wrong discussion to have... NIL the heck out of recruits and build more elite roster with OL, receivers, backs DBs etc. not just One top recruiting class. Need to stack classes. Make coaching almost a moot point. Waaay cheaper and less disruptive.

I know what people want. And I know what will be extended. Nobody looking at multiple schools will walk away from guaranteed money

Nobody cares. Work Harder

Coaches giving up contracts want security for the loss of previously contracts proceeds.

Why don't any of the armchair ADs acknowledge that as a fact instead of just claiming guarantees aren't necessary.

If you want to fire Jimbo just pay out the guarantee and get in with it. But do it with grace and dignity.

This would be great if it were a real thing, but other than Kirk Ferentz's kid (Iowa's truly dreadful offensive coordinator), I haven't seen a performance based contract that pays ass my dude money if the coach fails to perform. They all pay boat loads of money + comparatively small bonuses if the coach makes a bowl or wins the conference or whatever.

Performance-based with insane money for hitting milestones, such as a conference championship or natty. Base salary would be modest.

Disappointed that I can only give this post 1 star.
