Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman ranks in the top 10 nationally among QBs in several PFF categories:
— Carter Karels (@CarterKarels) September 3, 2023
1. ADOT (14.8).
4. Offensive grade with no play-action (92.1).
5. Offensive grade (87.8) when pressured.
7. Offensive grade (91.8) when blitzed.
9. Offensive (91.9).
10. Passing (91.1)
He looked just like he looked last year when he had time to throw. Not sure why we should expect any different going forward. Everybody seems to be acting like this was the first time we've seen the guy play.texaswhiskeyco said:
Do you think this game was a flash in the pan for Conner or is this what we can expect from our QB moving forward? Genuinely excited to watch him play and continue his success, just don't know if we can look at new mexico's defense, the same way we can look at the rest of the sec defenses.

Hoping him + receiving makes for a special combo.
At the same time you can read to much into these early wins. Have we all forgotten Kenny Hill, who through 3 cupcakes appeared to be the Johnny Manziel but better in every way?
When you have playmakers like Noah, Evan, and Moose. The very last thing you want to do in 1 on 1 down the field is overthrow the football. You error on the underthrow and expect your guy to make a play and at worst expect him to prevent a pick.Definitely Not A Cop said:
Barring injury, it's what I expect.
People keep saying that he under threw the deep balls, and I'm not disagreeing really, but CW has yet to throw an interception in his career. I think he has a good handle on where to throw the ball to make sure the defender can't get it, even if it's not a perfect pass in stride with the receiver. I expect him to be fully throwing people open by the end of the season, and I'm confident that we have good enough receivers now that can realize and adjust to that mid route.Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman ranks in the top 10 nationally among QBs in several PFF categories:

I think the way he played in his last 2 games shows he is benefiting from experience. NM passing efficiency defense was #80 last year so although below average, it's not the bottom as it shows for 2023 after one game against us. LSU pass eff def was #29. Conner had ridiculous Passing Efficiency and QBR stats against both teams.texaswhiskeyco said:

Kenny Hill's first game was not a cupcake. It was at South Carolina on Thursday night before the opening weekend.jwright4288 said:

I disagree. Conner steps up in the pocket quite a bit. The times he backpedals he knows where he's going with the football and is just buying a second or two for his receivers. Compared to something like Trevor Knight, he used to always backpedal in panic, never stepped up. Almost every one of these instances for Conner has resulted in a completion.90ags said:
agree on the backpedaling throws...works vs lesser teams, but will not vs. SEC competition. Granted a couple were under pressure and bought some time, but a few of those passes (and a couple of the incompletes) were underthrown due to that.
Sky is the limit though and if run game improves, he will get so much better as the defenses won't be able to all out blitz on every down.
UM will blitz a lot as betting they do not respect our run game at the moment.
What was LSU last year? a cupcake? SMHBluecat_Aggie94 said:
What sets aside a good quarterback from elite is how they handle elite pressure. Connor hasn't seen that yet, but he definitely delivered some nice throws when NM did get some pressure.
Every reason for optimism.

This board spent years complaining about Kellen overthrowing everything. Now they want to complain about completions they think are slightly underthrown. He's putting the ball exactly where it should be. 13 TD and 0 int in his career so far. Conner knows what he's doing...
Right now? Somewhat of a "safe" feeling.Ian Neff said:
I'm interested to know what people "feel" when the ball is snapped to CW.
For instance, when JFF got the ball, I anticipated something amazing every single time. Glued to the play.
Alternatively, when Dustin Harris was back to return a punt, I all but had to close my eyes because I was so afraid he'd drop it.
Thoughts?
This. With the WR group crushing it too it's hard to precisely attribute the success -- a textbook application of the Evans-Manziel Uncertainty Principle. It'd be interesting if there were a QB metric that specifically compensated out receivers' capabilities. But as a life-long football fan, the 0 INT stat at this point kind of makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.texaswhiskeyco said:
This receiving group we have is just outstanding!
I remember thinking with JFF when A&M had a small lead late in the game....just let them score quickly defense so JFF has enough time to get the winning TD.ClearlyJustSomeAg said:Right now? Somewhat of a "safe" feeling.Ian Neff said:

I remember with JFF it'd be 3rd and 15 and I'd think "we can pick this up." I'm certainly not there with Conner yet but it feels like he's doing the right things.

And while NM was playing to stop the run, we need to be more effective running. That balance will help the Pass Game.geoag58 said:
The offensive line protection is going to have to be better in spite of what Jimbo said. Weigman did great but those two balls he just flung before getting hit will not always work out our way.
funny I see several quarterbacks on Sundays do just that and win a lot.Sagitariutt Jefferspin said:
he played real good
but
them throwing while backpedling gonna get picked in sec
he underthrowed some deep balls to
but he git away with that against nm

I know we all have BAS and don't want to get our hopes up... but if Weigman played for Bama they'd already be talking the way they did for Bryce Young early in his career.
He's going to have to keep working for it, but his early film looks about as good as any Freshman/Sophomore QB we've seen in recent years.
