Do you think this game was a flash in the pan for Conner or is this what we can expect from our QB moving forward? Genuinely excited to watch him play and continue his success, just don't know if we can look at new mexico's defense, the same way we can look at the rest of the sec defenses.

Barring injury, it's what I expect.

People keep saying that he under threw the deep balls, and I'm not disagreeing really, but CW has yet to throw an interception in his career. I think he has a good handle on where to throw the ball to make sure the defender can't get it, even if it's not a perfect pass in stride with the receiver. I expect him to be fully throwing people open by the end of the season, and I'm confident that we have good enough receivers now that can realize and adjust to that mid route.

This receiving group we have is just outstanding!

While I'm not going to expect him to have the same number of TDs as incompletions each week, what we saw on Saturday was a pretty traceable progression of what he showed when he had a full complement of skill players last year (Ole Miss and LSU games).

Quick and decisive decisions on both where to go with the ball and when to take off and run, a willingness to sling the ball around, and accurate deep shots are all things we were hoping to see and Conner put them on front street.

Between his moxy, the receivers, and Jimbo/Bobby's gameplan I think we are gonna be in for a great season at QB.

Hoping him + receiving makes for a special combo.

At the same time you can read to much into these early wins. Have we all forgotten Kenny Hill, who through 3 cupcakes appeared to be the new Johnny Manziel but better in every way?

If he is a stud, then he should dominate against lesser competition. Did he do that? YES!

If he is a stud, should he rise to the occasion on the biggest stage like LSU last year? Did he do that? YES!

He looked just like he looked last year when he had time to throw. Not sure why we should expect any different going forward. Everybody seems to be acting like this was the first time we've seen the guy play.

To be fair, had the "Kenny hill passed out in a planter" not spoiled the locker room, I think that would have been a solid season

When you have playmakers like Noah, Evan, and Moose. The very last thing you want to do in 1 on 1 down the field is overthrow the football. You error on the underthrow and expect your guy to make a play and at worst expect him to prevent a pick.

This board spent years complaining about Kellen overthrowing everything. Now they want to complain about completions they think are slightly underthrown. He's putting the ball exactly where it should be. 13 TD and 0 int in his career so far. Conner knows what he's doing...

Conner just needs to not throw interceptions like King and all will be fine. To date, it looks like Conner got literally all the good mojo and King got all the bad.

I know we all have BAS and don't want to get our hopes up... but if Weigman played for Bama they'd already be talking the way they did for Bryce Young early in his career.

He's going to have to keep working for it, but his early film looks about as good as any Freshman/Sophomore QB we've seen in recent years.

I think the way he played in his last 2 games shows he is benefiting from experience. NM passing efficiency defense was #80 last year so although below average, it's not the bottom as it shows for 2023 after one game against us. LSU pass eff def was #29. Conner had ridiculous Passing Efficiency and QBR stats against both teams.

Miami pass eff def is #56 after their first game (last year was #84), but this is a much bigger test than just the quality of their defense since it's a road game. If Conner passes this test, "I will believe!" as Coach Prime likes to say.

And of course, we have to say the same about the offensive line and receivers benefiting from experience.

We play a very good team on the road this Saturday. We should know everything we need to know after that game.

them throwing while backpedling gonna get picked in sec

he underthrowed some deep balls to

but he git away with that against nm

The offensive line protection is going to have to be better in spite of what Jimbo said. Weigman did great but those two balls he just flung before getting hit will not always work out our way.

agree on the backpedaling throws...works vs lesser teams, but will not vs. SEC competition. Granted a couple were under pressure and bought some time, but a few of those passes (and a couple of the incompletes) were underthrown due to that.

Sky is the limit though and if run game improves, he will get so much better as the defenses won't be able to all out blitz on every down.

UM will blitz a lot as betting they do not respect our run game at the moment.

Kenny Hill's first game was not a cupcake. It was at South Carolina on Thursday night before the opening weekend.

"Kenny Hill passed out in a planter" also happened like several months before the season started and would have been old news if his performance had not dropped and then finally cratered in the Alabama game.

I disagree. Conner steps up in the pocket quite a bit. The times he backpedals he knows where he's going with the football and is just buying a second or two for his receivers. Compared to something like Trevor Knight, he used to always backpedal in panic, never stepped up. Almost every one of these instances for Conner has resulted in a completion.

In short, one of his greatest assets I believe is pocket awareness. Knows how to move and where to move to buy time and get the ball to the right guy...and looks calm doing so. He made the same backpedal against LSU to buy a few seconds to let Green get open on his route across the field for the TD. (So obviously did work vs. SEC) It's done with intent not panic. Pretty impressive actually.

What sets aside a good quarterback from elite is how they handle elite pressure. Connor hasn't seen that yet, but he definitely delivered some nice throws when NM did get some pressure.

Every reason for optimism.

Dude looked like a straight up stud last year and has continued this season. He's not perfect, but he's damn good.

I'm interested to know what people "feel" when the ball is snapped to CW.

For instance, when JFF got the ball, I anticipated something amazing every single time. Glued to the play.

Alternatively, when Dustin Harris was back to return a punt, I all but had to close my eyes because I was so afraid he'd drop it.

Thoughts?

What started my optimism about this season, which is always low due to 51 years of following the Ags, was the excitement in Dave Elmendorf's voice as he talked about the quickness of Conner's release, and his accuracy. Coming from an All-American and All-Pro DB, that was meaningful to me.

So, yes, I expect more of the same this year from Conner.

I agree with this. Especially with how flag happy modern football is when it comes to pass interference. Even if you don't catch it, there's a 50/50 chance at a PI

Right now? Somewhat of a "safe" feeling.

I remember with JFF it'd be 3rd and 15 and I'd think "we can pick this up." I'm certainly not there with Conner yet but it feels like he's doing the right things.

This. With the WR group crushing it too it's hard to precisely attribute the success -- a textbook application of the Evans-Manziel Uncertainty Principle. It'd be interesting if there were a QB metric that specifically compensated out receivers' capabilities. But as a life-long football fan, the 0 INT stat at this point kind of makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

But I'd say we have extraordinary talent at both QB and receiver, along with great chemistry between them. So the good news, for us fans, is that the overall performance dynamics should be durable. The bad news is that the individual attribution scenario is no more clear than in years past.

I remember thinking with JFF when A&M had a small lead late in the game....just let them score quickly defense so JFF has enough time to get the winning TD.

OP, I used to go watch him in HS all the time. I still live less than 10 minutes from his house. Dude was a freak show sort of like JFF was at Tivy but Weigman was doing it against 6A competition. When he committed back on 2/4/21, I remember it b/c it was my brother's birthday and I posted on the very first thread I could about his commitment and I stated then and there with no doubt that he has Heisman potential. I actually said he will be the closest thing to JFF we have seen here since JFF. I have posted on almost every thread about Weigman since that I still think Heisman potential and I expect him to win it or at least be a finalist before he leaves Aggieland. Now, in order for him to do that, it will require much better OL play and lots of wins. If we don't get a lot better OL play, we won't get as many wins as he might need to get him to NY. If we do, there is no doubt IMM that he will be there.

You can't throw with that kind of accuracy and not be able to repeat it IF HE GETS THE SAME PROTECTION. There will never be another Manziel but CW is going to be a great one.

And while NM was playing to stop the run, we need to be more effective running. That balance will help the Pass Game.

Would like to see the TE's getting a couple thrown their way. And yep, FISH running backs still need to learn to "Block Better."
