B1G has substantially higher revenue tied to their contract.

What accounts for this disparity as they have the same number of schools as the SEC?

B1G $1,000,000,000 Thru 2030
SEC $811,000,000 Thru 2034
B12 $380,000,000 Thru 2031
ACC $240,000,000 Thru 2036
P12 $250,000,000 Thru 2024

Jimbo negotiated their deal.

Michigan and Ohio St are usually fun to watch. Penn St is hot and cold every year.

So what is the reason to pay them so much more?

I believe football is more exciting when teams pass a lot. I believe you get more big plays in the air than on the ground. Would that not be better TV and warrant better contracts?

The Big 10 does not have many teams doing a lot of passing. Last year Ohio St finished #14 in passing.

No others in the top 20.

Sankey/SEC put all the eggs in the Disney/ESPN basket. B10 had multiple competitors for the rights.

So why the 3x disparity for ACC v SEC with both all in with ESPN/ABC???

The network executives are idiots. And how about CBS...after a decades long relationship with the SEC, part of which included a bargain basement payout as the market changed during a contract period, they bail to get in bed with the B10. I'm not sure if that's on Sankey (also an idiot) or CBS.

Better content? The disparity could be multi-factorial in explanation. It just strikes me as competition in an auction is better than none.

Big 10 has games on CBS, Fox, and NBC over the air, plus FS1 cable
SEC has games on ABC over the air, plus ESPN channels cable

Think we lose CBS after this year. The over the air networks pay better.

Mostly has to do with when the deals were struck.

To be crystal clear: CBS pays $55 million for 2023. ABC is expected to pay low $300 million just for over the air committed time slots for replacing CBS. CBS refused to pay one penny more when we and Mizzou joined. And dropped out of the bidding against ESPN when the price is less than they're paying the Big Ten (but includes streaming rights for every Big Ten football and basketball game on Paramount+ so more content than the CBS deal with the SEC.)

I would offer the SEC demonstrates very little imagination in their negotiations from what is visible publicly. Both Slive and Sankey get what they can easily ge As long as it is at least a meaningful increase. Kevin Warren showed imagination in getting an almost $8 billion deal plus escalators that could take it to $10.

1. Snakey did the negotiations
2. Yankees gotta stick together

Largest three television markets in the US
#1 - NYC
#2 - LA/Orange County
#3 - Chicago

The Big Ten has them all.

The SEC has
#5 - D/FW
#6 - Atlanta
#7 - Houston

A great example of why A&M was such a good add for the SEC, but still not the same number of potential viewers as the Big Ten has in their footprint.

I live half a mile from Autzen Stadium, actually looking forward to some of the games next year. Last year, the UO/Utah was the only decent game and thankfully the Ducks won that one. I'm curious to see how the Michigan fans travel, I may see about renting out my driveway for parking.

This.
Rare is the off-season in the NBA or NFL where the most recent star quarterback or star player's newest contract isn't the highest ever.

Eyeballs.

Michigan and OSU are the top two most watched teams in college football (as long as they're winning).

The SEC trails the B1G slightly but the ACC and Big12 trail far behind and that's why there's a disparity in money.

A big outlier here and maybe would be interesting to see join the fold of bid options would be Amazon. Streaming is clearly the way forward and a partnership with them to use their AWS servers. More avenues of potential eyeballs is always the way forward. TV is dead. Streaming is the future. At least it has been for awhile.

To know what's currently wrong with streaming, look at MLB.

To get Cardinals games here in Missouri, you have to subscribe to Bally Sports Midwest, and it will add about $25 per month to your bill to get the channel. It no longer gives you every Cardinal game though (ignoring, of course, national telecasts).

The Cards have been on Apple+ and Peacock, and I've seen a Yankees game on Amazon. I'm already paying a fortune to watch this team. I'm not adding a monthly bill for Apple+, Peacock, Amazon, or any other streaming service until it gets me every game (on one of these services).

Along those lines, I hope to see a future where I can pay a single streaming bill and watch all SEC football/basketball/baseball.

Streaming may be the way forward but the quickest way to kill college football would be to force fans to pay for additional subscriptions to see games.

I wouldn't want to pay extra money to see SEC games and I damn sure wouldn't pay extra to watch a different conference.

That why we should go after Miami and NC instead of Clemson and FL

I am not convinced anyone has a great strategy. But I would grab Stanford and NC.

Cal and Virginia would also be solid adds…and don't deny the new teams investment.
