Any thoughts about the non Playoff Bowls in 2024? Hate to see them go but hard to envision any scenario where they survive.

Where are they going? Vacation?

Bowl games should have been gone in 1998, and then again in 2014…hopefully, they officially die in 2024.

I'll never understand why people like watching and/or attending bowl games.

As long as they can do better ratings on ESPN than another talking head show, they'll be around.

Follow the money. Espn owns the rights of most of these bowl games, not including the Sun Bowl. This was done when Espn was buying up all sports related content and of course they overpaid. I don't know how long each of these contracts are and its crazy watching some of these games with dozens and dozens of fans in the stands. China hasn't produced enough material needed for the tarps that would be there.

Bowl games will continue. But the playoffs will be thoroughly hyped by ESPN because they control rights only for the first two years…

Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson, Grant. Those are a few reasons.

There was a time that I would watch many bowl games...no longer. Opt-outs and commercials ad nauseam have turned me off to most. The "nothing to play for" attitude causes me to say "nothing to pay for."

Again though, the business model isn't to make money packing the stands. It's to produce a 4 hour block of live sports programming for people to watch on their couch around the holidays.

Only in college football can 40+ teams get to end the season with a win. Every other sport has a handful. And yet we *****. Bowl games are awesome!

Because college football is great. The regular bowl games are usually more entertaining than the playoffs which are almost always blowouts.

Run of the mill bowl games (many of the bowls) and sub-par bowl games (crud bowls) might wind up dying a slow death. With expanded playoffs, NIL concentrating talent over fewer teams, I don't see the appeal to a bunch of games that pit a team with an 8-4 record against one with a 7-5 or 6-6 record. Unless, of course, you went to one or the other.

Reasonable takes. But retail interest by everyday fans in NIL will wane and without fan deals there might not be deals connecting athletes to schools. Think Stacked here.

What product has anyone bought b/c of an A&M athletes' NIL?

Anyone? Anyone?

Biggest NIL winners will continue to be female athletes.

It's not just the rights to the games, espn actually owns a lot of the games themselves. It's free money to them. They're not going anywhere till they're a money loser

I agree, and several of those games have been very entertaining and competitive.

the death of the bowls has been greatly exaggerated. As long as there is conference pride, and
coaches get to practice more, they'll be here.

i like having the choice of watching or not. Strange that is a burden to some here.

I got a Spiller tshirt last year as a gift for my birthday, which happens to be 10/9, which happens to be the day we beat Bama, which is also Jimbo's birthday (and John Lennon). I love that shirt!

There have always been too many bowl games. 6-6 shouldn't be rewarded. But there will be 12 teams in the playoff and a bunch of 8-10 win teams that don't get in that have earned some type of post season. If bowls in general stop being profitable I could see some of them dying off and that would be fine.
Opt outs, portal transfers and coaching changes have hurt the quality for sure.

I would love to see coaches get together during bowl games and have some fun, have the players play out of positions, it would be so funny to watch Bryce Foster play QB and have Amari Daniel's snap it to him. I know you have to worry about injury's but turn it into some sort of pro bowl. It may not be Intriguing to regular football fans, but parents, players, and fans that follow closely would love it.

A vivid reminder of why I'm much more happy we ended the season whipping that LSU ass vs playing in one of these.

Almost every bowl game is profitable - or at least breaks even for the "non profit" ones.

Many of these bowls have CEO's that make 500k-1M in compensation for running them and employ full time staff.

Even with few tickets sales their revenues are significant from title/corporate sponsorships and typically pump plenty of money into the local economies

ESPN invented some of those bowls in order to have something to televise. I don't think they're going to get rid of them. Plus, since only a small percentage of teams can make the playoff, it gives something for many teams to play for.

There are lots of fans that support their particular University but are not " College Football Fans "
Meaningless bowl games are one of the things they disagree on

Too much college football…. Think about what you just said

And you have missed out on some good games so far this bowl season.

Some people complain about everything

" There are too many football games on TV.. waaaa"

Should MLB adopt a similar attitude about meaningless games? Why should the Rangers play the Red Sox in a September series if both teams are eliminated? I am very glad the playoffs are expanding. No reason not to go to 16 or even 32 teams down the road. But for those teams not invited a bowl game isn't a bad thing. If you are worried about it, just do an NIT style tournament for the next 16. Nothing wrong with watching the 13th beat team face #17 in the CF NIT, for example.

Some body took a 32 team NCAA basketball tourney and made it intoMarch Madness. No reason this can't be done in College football.
