I know it's no longer fashionable to believe, but the actual words you use when communicating still matter.
If you want to challenge a team of individuals, you tell them that every position is open and they will have to fight for playing time, but that the slate is clean and everyone will get the same opportunity to prove themselves.
You don't tell them you are bringing "luggage" that's better than they are, and they should hit the portal. That's not a challenge; that's insinuating that they won't get a fair shake.
You don't say "here's your new quarterback" when introducing your son and then throw in as an afterthought, "He'll have to earn it." Does anyone really believe that? You've already tipped your hand.
The media will give Sanders a pass every time but I think his act is going to wear thin quickly.
the bolded part I agree with 100%.
The part about brining the "luggage" I dont fully agree. I think he was making the point to tell the current players they better be ready to compete, because their current starting roles aren't protected. The "luggage" he's bringing are trasnfers and recruits that will be there to compete for jobs. Not necessarily a slap in the face to the current players on the team, but more a warning that if they aren't ready to work, and compete then GTFO.
"We've got a few positions taken care of already, 'cause I'm bringing my luggage with me."
"go ahead and jump into the portal... cause we're bringin' kids."
"the more of you that leave, opens up that many more spots."
That isn't a challenge to "Man Up" or saddle up... it is "here is the door let me help you out of here."
That will play well for some. Not for most. Sanders is going to let as many enter the TP as wants and will pack the "luggage" of many more that he doesn't want there.
LOTS of kids are going to be displaced without a place to go and we'll see how that works long-term for "Trap Door" Sanders.
