What about beating #2 Nebraska in the original maroon out game, or #1 OU in 02?

Thanks for the memories. I was there with my late, class of 1950 dad, who got into it with the cops and did his dead level best trying to get arrested.

Great game. I was there as a Bleacher Creature in the end zone. Went up to visit friends on the 3rd deck. Only thing that separated you from the 3rd deck unfinished edge and the ground down below was a strip of yellow caution tape. Best headline and bumper sticker from that game was "Gumbo to Tacos - 13 to 7".

That was my fish year. I was shocked out how so many people went to Northgate to celebrate that the street was shut down in both directions. That night was truly an eye opening experience for an 18 year old kid.

BTHO LSU!!!!!!!

I wasn't at the '79 game but watched on TV. I WAS in Austin the next year for our 24-14 win, also an upset. Got plugged in the back of the head with a roll of toilet paper when I came out of my seat towards the end of the game. I think it was a sack of their QB, Donnie (?) Little. Hurt like hell too - a quality throw from several rows back.

For me it's the 1971 17-9 upset win over #8 Arkansas in the hills on the road with Jo Mac King at QB. It was Stallings last year and we were not very good ending up 5-6 for the year.

Those of us left on campus that weekend went to Easterwood to greet the team at the old terminal. There 700 +/- in the tarmac. I'll never forget it.

Every time someone calls for a list of the all-time greatest running plays in Texas Aggies History, I always nominate Thomas Saunders' run against t.u. in 1980.

That was a good read on the 79 season and brought up some quirks in the season I hadn't ever thought about. I always felt like Wilson personally cost us 3 wins, BYU, Tech and UH with poor management. For example, against UH we had a 4th and short at the UH 40 with about 1 minute to play and a 14-10 lead. We go for it but the play was for Mosley to run around in the backfield to run clock. He got tackled around the 50. UH had made a living coming back late with Elston at QB and they did just that to win 17-14. Wilson's teams had talent but he was not close to ready to be a HC at a major program.

Maybe not the biggest but in 2007 (?), Fran had the off field secret fiasco and a disappointing season.
Going into Texas game he had already had negotiated his buyout and Texas was ranked in top 15. Texags was overwhelmingly ready to be done with him.

Aggies won 38-30 and Fran resigned.

If you want to know more about the off field controversy regarding Fran, there is a certain newsletter you can subscribe to.

Wasn't the biggest upset, but beating the crap outta the Mormons in the 1990 Holiday Bowl was mighty satisfying after they had talked crap leading up to it.

This could be split into two threads.

1. Biggest upset
2. Biggest spoiler/not spoiler

2002 ou game prevented them from going to the national championship probably

2022 lsu wrecked playoff contention

2012 had no impact on Bama since it was midseason and they still won a national title

due to the struggles this year...there have been numerous references to the 1970, 1971, and 1972 seasons.

each one of those featured a significant upset.

in 1970 A&M (2-9) upset #12 LSU (9-3) in Baton Rouge. The Tigers were the SEC champ that season.

the aforementioned 1971 upset of #8 Arkansas (8-3-1) in Fayetteville. The Hogs finished 2nd in the SWC...and would have gone to the Cotton Bowl (since they beat t.u. earlier in the year).

in 1972 A&M (3-8) upset #20 Arkansas (6-5) again. This time at Kyle. The Hogs were 5-2 entering the game. A&M was just 1-6.

also in 1972...Emory's 3-8 team beat a good SMU (7-4) team at the Cotton Bowl

in recent times...I believe the Ags were 14-point underdogs at Auburn in 2014.

Auburn was 7-1 going into the game. A&M was 6-3.

Ags won 41-38.

Auburn's season fell apart afterwards

You might think Johnny going into Bryant Denny and beating the tide, but we were rolling at the time. Building up a nice head of steam. It was shocking to be sure, but I don't think anywhere near '02 Oklahoma or especially KState in '98. Absolutely zero people saw that one coming

On the road vs. home or neutral makes a huge difference. Doesn't matter in 2012 if we were rolling or not... on the road, vs. #1, vs. eventual SEC and CFP champ........... that is a huge upset.

2012 - Beat No. 1 Alabama 29-24 on the road

To me that is the biggest upset because it is harder to upset Top 5 teams on the road than at home. Also, Alabama went on to beat Georgia 32-28 in the SEC Championship Game and crush Notre Dame 42-14 in the BCS National Championship Game.

2-0 after the 1970 LSU win in Baton Rouge. However, we didn't gain much POSITIVE momentum from that Road Victory. It was my Fish Year and we went on to start another Streak. A Losing Streak as we LOST the next 9. Those included lowly TCU, SMU, Rice and Baylor. All before they improved their staff's. Yea, Baylor before Teaff and SMU before Collins, etc.

1984 vs. TCU needs to be mentioned.

Thanksgiving weekend of a very disappointing season. 4-5 going in and there was speculation about Jackie Sherrill's future. TCU was ranked #17 in their Cinderella year and would have gotten the SWC title with a win.

A&M pulled off a 35-21 upset that surprised everyone.

It wouldn't be a fluke as A&M would humiliate a #13 ranked Texas team in Austin the next week. This was the turning point for the program as they ended up winning the next 3 SWC titles.
