Since we're playing Mississippi State this week I'm posting what plays Mike Leach ran at Washington State. Only slight changes at Mississippi State, the offense remains largely unchanged from the early 2000s. A few overview notes I have as well:

  • They have a toss play now they run from Ace where the WRs to the backs side are in a condensed split. Typically this is run into the boundary.
  • They have a few modifiers for Ace, one that moves both the inside receivers on the line and outside guys off, and one that puts both outside guys on and inside receivers off. You might see these a couple times a game.
  • When they run scissors from trips instead of their standard Early/Late formation where the innermost slot (The Y receiver) is on the line and the middle slot (H receiver) is off, the inner slot will be off and the middle slot will be on so it looks more like a isosceles triangle. They will run other plays such as mesh, their runs, and some screens from it, but as far as I can tell the main reason is to help with route spacing on scissors and the other plays are just to protect it. They won't run most of their other trips concepts from this modified set unless they motion into it.
  • WR splits are not separate from the play, they're baked into it and where the ball is on the hashes.
  • He isn't calling plays off a notecard, it's a folded piece of paper divided into sections for backed up, open field, redzone, 3rd downs (short, mid, long), screens, and tags. Depending on what he wants he folds it different ways.
  • Last year they started running a variation of Y Cross with Z running a short motion pre-snap to get inside of Y before snapping it, effectively making it 95- Z Cross.
  • The offense is a simple, execution based offense. It's a little over 20 total plays in the offense, but they won't run all of them in a game. Hal Mumme ran mesh once 52 times in a game out of 86 passing plays (I don't think I've ever seen Leach reach that level of extreme, but it you demonstrate you can't stop a play he will pick on you until you do, so you can never count him running the same play 50+ times in a game out).

Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Thanks for the analysis.

To compare, does anyone know how many plays are in the A&M offense? I know the reads probably make it an infinite number of possibilities.

Simple defense for MS. Bull rush QB every play and maintain ball awareness to stop rush. Also contain QB. Tackle hard.

Hit wide receivers coming across the middle and make them feel it.

And coaches don't, because every week they have to gamelan for schemes that are at the very least this level of complexity.
