For the past 15 years, anytime App State was mentioned - "oh watch out for them. I remember when they beat Michigan."

Guess for 15 years more that'll be our name instead.

Not sure I agree. The Michigan win was more impressive and noteworthy. Our program is not nearly as good, nor as storied, as the Wolverines.

No, Michigan was ranked #5 and was a legitimate Top 10 team when the Mountaineers defeated them.

We were just an overrated #6 team who will now be a footnote in the 2022 season history books.

Michigan's loss was worse due to these facts that:

In 2007:

  • Michigan entered the preseason as ranked #5 in Division I-FBS and a favorite to go to the BCS Division I-FBS national title (Note: App State was a replacement for Hawaii who was ranked #23 in Division FBS). After their loss to App State, the best outcome was the 2008 Rose Bowl via winning the B1G title.
  • App State entered the preseason as ranked #1 in Division I-FCS as the two-time defending Division I-FCS national champs and a favorite to defend the Division I-FCS national title again. After their win to Michigan, they went on to become the three-time Division I-FCS national champs.
In 2022:

  • TAMU entered this game as ranked #6 in Division I-FBS and a favorite to go to the CFP Division I-FBS playoff. After our loss to App State, the best outcome we have at this point is the Sugar Bowl via winning the SEC title.
  • App State entered this game as unranked in Division I-FBS and a favorite to win the Sun Belt title. If they win the Sun Belt title with no more losses they can possibly secure an auto-bid to the Cotton Bowl if they are the highest-ranked G5 conference champ.
