Ran through pretty much the whole team. I thought it was interesting that while we spend half of our time just focused on the QB battle, he almost forgot to talk about it. He talked all other offense and defense positions and moved onto big picture stuff and then was like, "oh yeah. Also, the QBs…"
Paraphrasing stuff…
He Pretty clearly just does not care about what people say about our recruiting. A few months ago, he got fired up on the topic but I think he just doesn't care what people say by now.
Talked about the importance of being genuine and personable with recruits, that's what they've built their recruiting on. People make decisions based on people, not material things.
"The early enrollee freshmen want to be coaches tough. They want to be challenged."
"There are five stars people have ranked. And then there are five stars in our minds… Going to camps and being seen is a huge chunk of rising in ranking. Lots of guys don't have time or money and that's why they aren't a 5 star." T
"Texas and USC aren't even doing a real game." Jimbo talked about how you gotta be good across the board because injuries happen.
"Early enrolling is really good for these football guys. Of the major sports, football is the hardest to adjust to in college. You come in in the fall and have camp, practice, classes, and games. Other sports aren't playing games in their first month of classes if they start in the fall."
Steve has helped to grow this OL in Foster's absence. Robinson has taken over as the leader of that squad.
Strickland, Wykoff and Moko have improved a lot. Moko has been working hard trying to play through injury, just an amazing athlete.
Evan Stewart and Yulkeith have really impressed Jimbo at WR. Talked about the importance of catching the 50-50 balls. LJ has been banged up but still looks good.
Lots of praise for the DL across the board. Too much too fast for me to pick anything out.
Cooper is playing really smart ball, seeing the play develop and stopping it well.
White Jr is playing great ball.
Lots of praise for the secondary as guys come back from injury. Seems really high on Chappy (the new Chappy) Denver Harris is "explosive, has great ball skills," but dealing with a lingering injury. Andersen also impressing. Gilbert is improving a lot with reps. Antonio Johnson is recovering a hammy. "There's work to do across the board, but the skill is there."
QB was a bit of the afterthought and he offered no indication as to who leads the race. King did great, made some good throws, running great after the injury. "Max IS a pocket guy, but he can run too." Extremely pleased with Wig, used the word "natural" a lot to describe him.
Jimbo will meet with all players soon to help them evaluate themselves and identify their strengths to build on and weaknesses to shore up this summer. Sounds like he expects guys to come back noticeably better in the fall, as any coach trying to win a natty should.
Okay now we're back from a break. Billy is going for the QB talk…
Do the yellow jerseys make it too easy for the offense? "It's better for the defense statistically when the QB has the yellow jersey. They get more sacks because we call anything close. So that didn't help the QBs in the spring."
We know you want to take the top off the defense, how do you feel about the team's ability to do that? "Really good. We have the ability to go over the top. And it's important to do so because even if you don't go over the top, it stretches the field and makes space so that crossing routes are for 10 yards, not 5."
"Adazzio brings a huge mentality, teaches fundamentals, and demands toughness. He teaches the OL to impose its will and go to war every snap. Our 2020 line didn't get drafted high, but they were great because of their mindset. Steve is teaching that.
"Durkin challenges coaches. He brings nuances to the defense that are hard to beat."
"Chase Lane had his best spring and is looking faster and using those hands well. He gets YAC. Moose needs to be consistent." Lots of praise for other WRs too. Price has been hurt. Marshall will be big coming in later too.
"Practice doesn't make you win. Perfect practice does." Practice develops habits, so make them good ones.
Yes we need speed at WR, but we have to get the technique right. These guys practicing the right way is crucial.
Jimbo likes to build from the ground up: recruit HS guys. He's not afraid to take a transfer but he needs to know they bring improvement to the team.
Does all this noise about A&M make you more excited to get to the season? "Noise and clutter are part of this world. It's about attention. Block that out. Coach a good team, be a good team. We're so close to being there last year, we just have to finish games. Get the young guys acclimated, get the older guys prepared. We have a vision at all levels of the university, and we have to bring vision that to be reality."
