when I was a kid, we had season tickets, and my dad (class of '59) took me and my sister to all the spring Maroon vs White games. Sis and I used to go down on the track and get autographs during breaks and probably even during the game. I got a bunch of good ones (George Woodard, Curtis Dickey, Richard Osborne, Garth Ten Naple, Jacob Green, Skip Walker, Mike Mosely are a few I can remember. I have misplaced them, but I pray/believe they're in a box somewhere that has made it thru all the moves with me...

One year I was under the west stands going to the concessions or maybe the bathroom with my uncle (also an Ag grad, not sure the year) and we saw a kid walking our way. My uncle recognized him and said "Aren't you Lester Hayes?" He was surprised and pleased to be recognized and said "yes." He had a cast on his arm and wasn't playing. I had my program with me and he gave me an autograph left-handed. It's pretty bad, penmanship-wise, but to me that makes it more special.

I really have to start looking thru boxes...

I think it was Ed Simonini (but I'm not sure) who I went up to on the sidelines and said "Mr. Simonini?!" to get his attention. I was probably 9 or 10. He heard me and so did some of the other players. He was surprised to be called "mister" and so were the others. He was kind of embarrassed and the other guys got a laugh out of it... but i got my autograph!

Also Google "Lester Haynes rule"… still not sure why he isn't in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Played basketball with him a few times at Deware.

Pot-bellied. No muscle tone.

Fastest, most athletic guy on the court. You could not go around him. I swear he could read minds and knew where the ball was going.

Google: What NFL player used stickum?

What NFL player used Stickum?

back Lester Hayes

Perhaps most famously, Raiders defensive back Lester Hayes was known to use so much of the substance on his body that Stickum dripped off him. Hayes intercepted 13 passes in 1980 and won the league's Defensive Player of the Year award.

Lester was taught by Fred Biletnikoff how to use Stickum.
But somehow Lester ended up with the stigma of being the ringleader.

Lester was a lockdown corner as good as any of that ever played. Tremendous athlete with great speed. It is a travesty that he is not in the Hall of Fame. He could cover any one that ever that ever played. He was a linebacker at Texas A&M so his physicality is unquestioned. Put him in the Hall of Fame.

Shameless plug...that '75 Aggie Defense was probably the best ever. Robert Jackson...unreal.

He was known as the fastest linebacker in college football.

In NFL he teamed with opposite great CB Mike Haynes.
Hayes and Haynes were the greatest CB duo in history. I forget which Super Bowl it was, they COMPLETELY shut down the opposing offense. It was utter domination.

That was before all these advanced passing schemes of today where you can more ir less neutralize someof the D domination.

PS- here's the story- says it all…

Absolutely insane that he's not in the Hall of Fame. Even Jerry Rice came out and said that he and many other receivers continued to use Stickum after it was banned.

I thought it was because of his stuttering. Sportswriters are some of the most bigoted people around.

I think he came in as a linebacker out of (Phyliis) Wheatly HS...You did nothing on that '75 defense. Old Ag side would yell to punt on 3rd down so we could see the defense.

Lester did what all the players did back then. For him to get totally singled out is total bull***** I do remember seeing him peel the stuff off after a game while being interviewed. Looked like a huge spider web. Too funny, but again others were doing it as well he just happened to play for the Raiders and they weren't liked by the league and seen as "dirty". Lester did stutter a lot and I'm sure that played into the hands of the sportswriters back then.

Emory Bellard recruited Lester out of Houston Wheatley High School as a defensive end. His sophomore year he moved to linebacker, then to safety for high junior and senior years. Great athlete and very flashy dresser. He had a very bad speech impediment that may have led him to be less sociable with sportswriters. Drafter by the Raiders as a safety, he was eventually rolled over t one of the top shut down corners in the league. He led the Raiders to two Super Bowl championship. Despite being the namesake of the Stick um rule, Lester absolutely belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Yeah, Lester had an AWFUL stutter. I knew him when he was a student. I was a year behind him and even around his friends and when relaxed, his stutter was just uncontrollable. He did a great job overcoming it as can be seen in his commercial. As nice a guy as was on campus.

My dad is '59 as well and we used to do the same thing.

One I remember was an alumni game where former players came back. Tony Franklin was already in the NFL and was a real Richard Cranium to me and the other kids asking for an autograph. Funny how those things stick with you after all these years.

Lester had 8 interceptions in 1976 in 12 games...and teams didn't throw the ball that much back then.

in 1975 he intercepted an option pitch vs. Baylor and took it 77 yards to paydirt

I do remember the '75 tu game.

My dad was reading the paper the next day, and I heard a quote from Robert Jackson, something along the lines of "Coaches told me if Earl Campbell goes to the bathroom, you go with him". Most of you guys know that Campbell was a fullback in the Wishbone before Akers made him a tailback.

Don't know which was better, but any contest that doesn't include the '94 or '75 defenses shouldn't be played.

Robert Jackson was the only human that could turn Earl backwards upon impact. Earl made so many of his yards after contact, except when he met up with Jackson.

Stopped him cold.

Consistently.
