It sure seems like there have been a LOT of major upsets this year. I dont recall this much turmoil in the first half of the season any other year. Almost everyone at the top has lost and there are several perennially middling teams thst are having great years. Weird season.

Covidness reigns.

See i thought about that but besides covid protocols and vaccine requirements everyone is practicing as normal and all things are generally as they used to be. I'm not sure how this can be blamed on covid.

Yep. Last season, covid helped a lot of teams perform better than expected purely from not having the covid issues other teams did. Key players missed key matchups (see Lawrence vs ND), schedules were different and unbalanced in terms of # of games.

This season, a lot of middle teams have got a big boost from super seniors and it's really leveled the playing field.

So combine teams with early hype bc a good year in a weird year last season with teams having extra experience this year and you get a bunch of upsets.

Ahhh didn't think about the extra year a lot of folks got. Great point.

Also, I'm not sure this has yet lived up to 2007.
Week 1:
App State over #5 Michigan
Pre-Dabo Clemson over #19 Florida St.

Week 2
South Carolina over #11 Georgia
South Florida over #17 Auburn

Week 3
Kentucky over #9 L'ville
Utah over #11 UCLA
Bama over #16 Arkansas (Saban's first year)

Week 4
Michigan over #10 Penn St.
Syracuse over #18 Louisville

Week 5
Colorado over #3 Oklahoma
Auburn over #4 Florida
#18 USF over #5 WVU
Kansas St. over #7 Texas
Maryland over #10 Rutgers
Georgia Tech over #13 Clemson
Illinois over #21 Penn St.

Week 6
Stanford over #2 USC (USC favored by 41 points)
Illinois over #5 Wisconsin
Tennessee over #12 Georgia

But... #1 didn't go down until Week 7, when #17 Kentucky beat #1 LSU in 3OT, and #2 Cal went down to Oregon St.

Nice. You have the comparable lists this season so far? I started college in 2008 so I wouldn't have been paying any attention in 07 so thanks for the info.

I also saw that either 40 or 46 ranked teams have lost this season so far and that it was the most ever. Dont recall the exact number from the graphic.

Here you go. I'll note that I didn't include most of the losses of teams below 20 from 2007, so I didn't list them here, either (except for the FCS loss by Washington). I'll also note that 2007 only got crazier after week 6.

2021
Week 1:
Va Tech over #10 UNC
UCLA over #17 LSU
Montana over #20 Washington
#19 Penn St. over #12 Wisconsin (not sure if this should count)

Week 2
#12 Oregon over #3 Ohio St.
Stanford over #14 USC
Arkansas over #15 Texas

Week 3
Fresno St. over #13 UCLA
WVU over #15 Va Tech

Week 4
#16 Arkansas over #7 Texas A&M
NC State over #9 Clemson
Baylor over #13 Iowa St.

Week 5
Stanford over #3 Oregon
Kentucky over #10 Florida
Mississippi St. over #15 Texas A&M
Hawaii over #18 Fresno St.

Week 6
Texas A&M over #1 Alabama
Boise St. over #10 BYU

One area where Covid still might be having an effect is that last year pretty much everyone played all conference games where, other than Bama, there weren't that many blowouts because you didn't get your couple of games against the sisters of the poor. That meant a lot of young guys got virtually no game action last year. Teams that had a lot of turnover are now playing young guys with no experience as opposed to guys with a healthy serving of garbage time experience.
Just a theory.

2007 was worse, but we're heading in that direction fast.

Btw 2 loss LSU won the natty that year before there was a 4 team playoff.

all reasons why rankings shouldn't come out until about week 5…. but they need rankings to sell mags and articles early on.

Yup, 2 fell in the same week 17 through 20 all fell. And also 11 UK.

And, of course, 25 tu.

7 ranked teams toppled in one week.

I think there is a non-zero non-ridiculous chance that at least two of these will come to pass:

Purdue over Ohio State
Penn State over Michigan
Maryland over Michigan State
Washington State over Oregon

If all four of those come to pass AND we win tonight, we officially re-enter The Discussion.
