Training Wheels for Calzada?

Interested to hear what those who played and/or coached QBs say:

Would it be feasible to reduce calzada's options in order to keep him from getting overwhelmed? Maybe something along the lines of eliminating progressions. Give him 1 read, the outlet, or scramble.

If feasible, is that fair to calzada?

Underlying assumptions:

1. Most opponents will copycat Barry odom's game plan
2. The OL will not get good enough at run blocking to force opponents to play us differently.
3. Arkansas was not a 1-off, calzada really dislikes throwing into tight windows underneath

I realize the RPO has the effect of limiting the QBs options. But opponents must honor the run game for it to work.

maybe eliminate the presence of a defense ie opponent

No fans, no TV cameras, and give him a green jersey.
You know, like "practice"

OP putting way too much thought into this instead of something else that he CAN control.

Jimbo's dome this before you know.

My guess is teams will continue to run their own defense as opposed to changing to Odom's defense. It seems college teams tend to do what they do week after week for better or worse. I also believe Jimbo will continue to run his offense and expect it to be executed. The good news is Jimbo's offense is nimble and can look quite different from from one week to the next. For example, the Florida and the Auburn game last year were both Jimbo's offense executed as intended but looked different in so many ways..

You can absolutely simplify reads for a qb by limiting the amount of reads before you take off or splitting the field in half's and working a side of the field. All that said the issue is not only Calzada. The offensive line and the injuries we have had has put additional stress on a backup qb. It's not enough that the backup has to play but he is missing multiple offensive lineman and wide receivers.

We need Layden Robinson and chase lane back.

Chase Lane, with the second highest percentage of drops in the SEC? We need THAT guy back?

Probably something along these lines...

Maybe make him throw short passes left handed to slow down the velocity?
Think the defense would notice?

Almost as much as dislikes the wide open receivers…

Lies damn lies and statistics

On 3rd and 5 not many on our team have caught as many throws. Lane is a good player.

Yeah the last time Jimbo's starting QB got hurt early on in the season, FSU rallied behind the backup to go 5-6!

I am well aware of that. The question was how much would it help. You seem to suggest that it would not but do not develop it.

How likely would putting training wheels on calzada be to salvage the season, everything else held equal?

I don't know, bc I don't know how to coach the qb. My gut is it would, but would also result in calzada transferring and being angry at jimbo. Oh well.

Our defense is seriously good. Even SEC average productivity from calzada beats Arkansas. Forget about bama, but we would have the upper hand in probably every other game (I don't buy OM).

Calzada is 53% on the season, averaging 5.6/attempt. He has thrown 3 picks in 108 attempts. Against Arkansas, he was 56% and averaged under 5/ attempt. He also had the pick.

2019 kellen Mond would have beaten Arkansas last week. He was 62% on the season, 6.9/attempt and only threw 9 picks in 13 games.

I agree that defenses will copy odoms game plan. Only way to beat it is for the OL gets some push up front and RBs get some consistent runs. Until our running game becomes a legit threat I don't care who the QB is

It's all in calzada's head. The game is too big for him currently. Either he has ability to grow, overcome this and get his mind right and settle down. Or he is not a gamer and can't see past the bright lights. We should get a good idea tonight.

Agree it's between the ears. There's a reason King won the battle and I think it's because he is more confident than Calzada.

I think you're on to something. Reverse progressions and read short to long. Hit the short guy quick if it's open, then look middle, and if neither open look long. Then throw it into next week if no one's free.

Receivers must get to spots faster. As quarterback Frank Tripucka once told all-star Denver Broncos receiver Lionel Taylor: You'd better get where you're going in a hurry because I'm not going to have much time.

The best thing you could do is have a good run game and slow down the rush. That would keep teams out of a 3 man front. Last week he was throwing into cover 8 and everyone knows how hard that is. Easy safe throws to gain confidence is about it and most people know that. Doing the against 8 in coverage i don't know and apparently neither does Jimbo without a run game.

The thing is, calzada has the arm to force it to a receiver underneath. The 3 deep were not in position to effect, unless it got tipped. Our WR/Wydermyer against most rovers or linebackers is a mismatch. Calzada throws on the break low and away. 50/50 of those or better get caught.

NO, that is not ideal. But ideal is living in the bunker under Graceland with Elvis and Marilyn.

All these generalizations people are spitting out are apt for a typical college qb. Calzada is anything but at this point.

"Give him 1 read, the outlet, or scramble."

This. One and run, if you will.

He's a very bad QB unfortunately because he's not comfortable in the pocket at all. I don't see him improving on that. Tap dancing around right off the bat. He runs backward when he feels pressure. No awareness of pressure. I'm shocked there was even a competition at the position between him and King.
