Look at the transfer portal over the last 3 years and see the ratio of transfers out vs transfers in to A&M. It's VERY lopsided. It seems other teams take advantage of it. Not that it's a great way to build a program, but sometimes your roster might dictate moves to fill needs.

I had ZERO comments on this thread, yet now I hear many people talking about our lack of Transfer Portal utilization. That includes Billy and others on TexAgs.

If I was a good QB, I'd take a look at A&M this year knowing they don't have much on the roster.

sometime over the weekend one of the espn talking heads mentioned this exact fact vis-a-vis Clemson. It got me wondering how much we could probably benefit from it to fill gaps in our lineup as well.

How does the portal work? Is it an actual online platform that closes and players communicate through?

Bama is starting a LB from TN and a WR from OSU. The portal is real and under utilized by JFF.

We are not good, as it turns out.

Who else could we have realistically gotten?

We got Jhamir Johnson b/c we needed an OT. Nobody good enough to be a solid backup defensive player wanted to be a backup. There were a few good OG's in the portal, but most were not interested.

Jimbo's system is not something that most QBs or WRs can learn in an offseason, especially if they do not transfer until after spring ball.

we gladly take a grad transfer, why would taking portal transfers be any worse of a move?

Hell I'd take some Tate Martell right about now

Would the exodus through the portal in the first few years of a coaching regime be good players who do not fit a new scheme?

the outgoing portal is what allows us to take 25 recruits a year so we do take advantage of it in that sense..

i'm pretty sure we would have taken any transfer portal kid that ended up moving into bama if they wanted to come.

until last year where we actually had kids go to ucla, minn and wash, the schools "taking advantage" of our outgoing kids were schools like incarnate word.... definitely not other p5 schools.

For better or for worse, Jimbo is the type of coach who enjoys developing players, however long that takes.

Some are X and O's guys and some are developers of men and athletes. Not saying Jimbo isn't high on C's and o's just that he's the kinda guy that isn't going to take another coaches 3-4 year player unless worst case scenario. He takes too much pride in developing and winning with "his" guys.

Well I'm waiting on him to do it

BYU's backup is really good. Good footwork, ball comes out on time. Might be better than BYU's starter. From El Paso. Baylor Romney. He'd be a huge upgrade over Calzada. Soph this year. Started about 5 games in his career. BYU's starter is also a soph, so Romney would potentially be a portal transfer candidate to start somewhere if he wanted to, IMO.

Also, in the last 3 years he's thrown exactly 7 passes.

We could save a lot of money if we hired some of y'all to coach the team.

The portal is going to be a part of everyone's reality now. Jimbo is gonna have to make it a priority to look for a handful of kids each cycle that will add depth at key positions where it's needed.

Yup. Esp really talented G5 and PAC12 guys who are tired of playing on obscurity. And want to prove something to NFL scouts.

The staff would need to identify gaps exist, then evaluate the available talent correctly. The talent might not be sitting in the portal to be picked.

Although, I suspect some coaches might be interfering with other teams when it comes to recruiting needed talent into the portal.
