I can see that being the case, but it ejects a player for half of the next game.

Still a BS call. If the runner is stretching for the end zone he shouldn't also be defenseless at the same time.

This seems like a simple fix to me.

If the player is defenseless then he needs to be ruled down where he became defenseless.

The whole concept of defenseless player is stupid. This is football. If a player is trying to gain yards and score the defender has to be able to hit him.

While I hate the targeting rule, I'm not sad for Auburn given at least one egregious horse collar tackle that they got away with in a season where they played for the national title.
