..."But in May, the SEC announced it was giving each of its 14 schools a one-time $23 million supplemental distribution for 2020-21 "to help mitigate the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SEC athletics programs." The conference said it is borrowing money against future increases in media-rights revenue to fund the distribution, and beginning in 2025, it will adjust school distributions accordingly. "

SEC running like fortune 500...instead of birmingham hicks...

may be this was a $$$ inducement to lesser SEC members to stay quiet against ou/texas admission and just enjoy the money...

Meaning they will be lower because of the addition of tu and ou. The numbers are not there.

The numbers aren't there because they don't exist yet. It's called upcoming contact negotiations. I bet you will be surprised.

Note this had been previously announced. And the suggestion was it was out of reserves not borrowed. I'll add that if aggiehawg says she hasn't seen evidence of any communication showing even a hint at the trajectory of payments, she probably is being careful in that statement.

I did wonder what the motivation was when this was announced earlier. It might be tied to the expansion discussions but was presented as in essence an emergency advance because the member institutions current academic year athletic revenue was down by that amount.

So joy news and odd timing on a refresh announcement. But surely there will be some more info coming. I think we all should be aware that some of this information that used to be more freely available is requiring FOIA (or state-level equivalent) requests to dig out. Sometimes they make an announcement to moot those requests.

Contract is signed. And was signed before that announcement. Why the need to warn the revenue will be down starting in 2025?

I don't have the list anymore, but the losses per school were
Massive. I know UF lost 55 million or so in 2020 and we were only fourth or fifth worst, I want to say LSU lost north of 80 million. It was a needed lifeline for many programs so that they didn't have to borrow or cut programs to stay afloat.
Nothing more to read into it than that.

So COVID-19 killed the Big 12 in essence?

Does that go down as 1 more death or 8?

Covid had nothing to do with it. The longhorn network killed the old B12 and the reorganized B12. Full stop. This is a lifeline for both ESPN and tu to erase that mistake.

I'm talking about future media contracts. We will make more money with Texas and OU in the conference.

This is a benign way to look at things. SEC announced the money in May but unknown when they made the distribution.

I think this is Sankey's $$$ "hush" money to take in ou/texas to sec...without to many push back from SEC 's have-nots...
