Is there enough talent remaining to create a super conference that would be competitive with the current SEC?
In terms of recruiting, no, and it isn't close. Combining all the other conferences yields a conference that's vastly inferior to the SEC. In the 5 year recruiting rankings, the SEC will now have 7 of the top 9 schools, with only Clemson and Ohio State coming in at 3rd and 5th.
Let's compare the new SEC to the rest of the world combined:
SEC - Other (5 year recruiting ranking)
Georgia (1) - Ohio State (3)
Alabama (2) - Clemson (4)
LSU (4) - Michigan (10)
Oklahoma (6) - Oregon (11)
Texas A&M (7) - Notre Dame (12)
Florida (8) - Penn State (14)
Texas (9) - Miami (15)
Auburn (12) - Florida State (17)
Tennessee (16) - USC (18)
MSST (22) - Washington (19)
Ole Miss (23) - Nebraska (20)
The list I'm using ends there, but it corresponds pretty will to the 247 team talent ranking.
The rest of the SEC should be around:
South Carolina (~25)
Arkansas/Kentucky (25-30)
Missouri (~50)
Vandy (~55)
I don't expect this comparison to change. I don't think there is enough talent left outside the SEC to produce a conference which is similar, even if you combine the remaining 3.5 conferences and Notre Dame.
The conference has a controlling interest in college football.
