Loftin should have buttoned this up instead a of dumb ass "gentleman's agreement". There should have been specific language to prevent this scenario or at the very least some kind of penalty clause. How we continue to step in it over and over is beyond me, it's like A&M is the Republican Party, can't get out of their own way.

Serious ? To legal minds- aren't verbal contracts binding if you have witnesses?

We probably have several million dollar lawyers on staff, but we let stupid shiat like this keep happening.

You screw something up that bad at you're office and you're fired that day, but these lawyers just keep getting paid.

There is absolutely no way the SEC would've agree to such a contractual stipulation. We were asking to join their league, not the other way around. FTR, I'm an attorney (but not a "conference realignment contract attorney").

They can be, but they have to be a hell of a lot more specific than this. Also, not surprised that we didn't get anything on paper. These are the same lawyers that gave Sumlin a 30M guaranteed contract maybe 24 months later and Billy Kennedy a fully guaranteed contract a bit after that.

Short answer is verbal contracts can be binding. But I seriously doubt Slive stood up in front of the entire group of SEC presidents and stated "Now that we've let A&M in, we won't let t.u. in unless A&M agrees to it." There's a reason these are referred to as "gentlemen's agreements" or "backroom deals". They're not made in the open, and aren't going to stand up in court.
