Better career, Sumlin vs Herman

Who do y'all figure will end up with the best overall head coaching career? Both had big time bowl wins, Sugar, Cotton. Sumlin had a top 5 finish.

Strangely enough, as incapable as Sumlin has proven himself, at this point I'd have to say his overall career has been better than Herman's. Although Herman will probably coach another P5 team, while Sumlin is done...

Sumlins time at Zona really brings him down a few levels. He was basically like Herman is at tu. Will win some games, sometimes win a decent game, never win the big one, and inexplicably lose games he shouldn't.

Sumlin will get hired by a group of 5 program like Liberty.

The luckiest fraudster alive. Nice to be rich, but it has to suck knowing you're not at all good at what you devote 80% of your life to

I don't think he ever won a decent game at Arizona.
For everything else, he had Johnny, Joeckel, Smith, and Evans to bail his ass out

I like sumlin better personally but he has proven to be a terrible coach. He lucked into a really good qb in Keemun at Houston and then a great qb in Johnny.

Probably more like 95%, and he's no Saban but I bet when he first got into coaching if you told him he'd be head coach at 2 P5 programs for near a decade, have a 95-63 record as a D1 head coach and make over $50M, he would have taken it.

Yep, and $49.9M of that, he owes in back pay to Johnny, Keenum, Kliff...

Maybe so. Not a lot of coaches are much good without a great QB, so Sumlin is not alone in that regard. He also might still be coaching here if he had managed to keep one of the two NFL starting QBs he had.

Regardless, if you rank all the college coaching careers that ever were, he's a lot closer to the top than to the bottom.

Okay, now do Herman!!!

I'd imagine it's really hard to recruit players to Tucson AZ. Probably the worse job in the PAC 12.

Their basketball team doesn't have that problem.

I wonder how hard it'll be for Herman to recruit at his next job...

Have you been to Tucson? It's really very nice.

How many MAC or Sunbelt programs would hire Herman if he got fired tomorrow and the price was right? Most of them.

What about Sumlin? None of them.

Herman is actually a good offensive coordinator. He could out scheme most G5 coaches.

Both Arizona schools should be powerhouses. They are in beautiful areas, and the women of the Arizona schools are unbelievable. I think going to Arizona would have been awesome.

Sumlin is an excellent coach. Not just good, excellent.

His career to date easily out-trumps Herman's, but that's based on unequal timeframes.

Changing the Op's question slightly: If (today) you are a collegiate AD located in Anywhere, USA and your only choices for head coach is Sumlin or Herman. For me, it would be Sumlin, hands down.

I hope he can sort his life out - it's hard to do when you're making millions upon millions, because there's no real sense that you're out of control when you can spend your way through problems. But I remember being a big fan of his when he was our OC, and hoping he'd come back one day to be our head coach. His last three years here were incredibly disappointing and huge letdowns, but I've always been a fan of his and I probably always will.

That is crazy. Sumlin has proven he cannot build anything. He was once a good wr coach. He was a decent recruiter until people figured out what a fraud he was.

He has recruited nothing at Arizona.

What AD would seriously have a press conference announcing the hiring of a coach coming off a 12 game losing streak? That's a tough way to sell season tickets.

Summy unleashed Reggie McNeal as the OC and beat #1 OU. Fran turned him into an option QB and he flamed out. Sumlin was a good transition to the SEC/Stadium expansion and I thank him for his time.
We now have a Championship coach

Then the next week we took a dump vs mizzou. Then the week after we got pushed around in Austin.

Sumlin has not called plays since then.

Summy beat two #1 teams, not many coaches have done that. We've been carrying this burden too long, time to lay it down.

If my math is correct, that means a yearly average of 4-4 in conference, and 3-1 out of conference, and then add a bowl win. That puts it at 8-5... yep, that sounds exactly correct.

Sumlin had a brilliant agent who parlayed a career recruiting coordinator into generational money.

And from 2012-2014 we played a very soft OOC with no p5 teams. 2015-2017 we played an overrated AZ st and UCLA wasnt very good either of the years we played them.

Sumlin wins because he is FREE. He is the RICHEST NON-PERFORMING COACH IN HISTORY.
