Just an idea I had. What about instead of crowning #4, the CFP committee gives #1-3 a playoff birth, meanwhile #4-5 have to play each other to make it to the semi-final round to play #1.

That way, you don't expand the playoff structure to 8 teams, but then you also don't leave a power 5 out...or in this year's case, you don't leave out a team with a strong resume that arguably, is a better choice over Ohio State (cough cough).

It would be similar to a wild card round in football or baseball.

Maybe Santa can bring it to us for Christmas.

That's a good idea. In NFL, there are no play-in games for the last playoff spots after a 16-game regular season has ended because the playoff field is set by that point. But in the MLB, there is a play- in-game, sometimes referred to as "Game 163", for the last playoff spot in both the National League and American League.

It's just shifting around the point at which you argue. Then the #6 position becomes the flashpoint, and you'd would also have the #4 team *****ing that they think they should have been #3...

Wherever the decision point is, your going to have people mad.

And frankly, it's what makes all this fun.

Ohio State wasn't the only thing we talked about (although it was the hottest topic).

We had plenty of talks about Clemson vs ND also and how one of them could be knocked out of the top 4 and give us room to slip in.

EDIT: So, I had a massive brainfart. I meant to say that we did have discussions regarding top 6. But I also just remembered that I had that discussion a lot IRL, not on TexAgs.

All that a 6 team playoff will buy you is a bunch of 2 loss teams clamoring for an expansion to an 8 game playoff.

The NFL, NBA and MLB ALL changed their playoffs...not sure why CFB can't do the same!

I'm starting to think that all of this playoff talk is just spitting in the wind. Its beginning to look like more games are getting cancelled than played, and I can't see how teams will stay healthy enough (whoever they are) for the next several weeks to actually pull it off.

No no no, 6 is the perfect number. 1. And 2. Get a bye.

Why would the #4 seed give up a spot in the playoff? Weird.

And it took a long time and several evolutions to get to the point where it is today, with certain formats lasting a very long time before they were changed

MLB had a 2 league, 2 division winner nlcs/Alcs format for decades before adding wildcards, which then lasted a Long time before getting to the current pay in format for wildcards

Changes happen, but they take time because you want to give the current format a chance to work

I think it's working in college football it's just that the fanbases of the number 5 team and the p5's that get left out are pissed every year

This is a weird year with the games played, but I'd ague that with our normal schedule we don't get in because we lose to bama late and don't have the Florida win

Our best win would have been auburn

And who knows how we would have fared given the timing of the games vs what we had with the all sec schedule

While it would be nice for us to make CFP at #4, it's also not so nice to probably have to play Bama who should be #1 seed. Think that's why some are saying...seen that result before.

Better than this 8-team playoff nonsense, which would effectively render the conference championship game worthless.
