Are "rub routes" the man-to-man beaters for offense?

If so, did we run much of them vs Lsu?

It's called a mesh concept. And yes they do help beat man. However there are two things that would've hindered us last night. The field conditions and our QB play. It's been well documented that Mond locks onto his first read and I don't know if he could make the correct one. Timing and cuts on those routes are pretty hard to do on a wet field.

Curls and crossing route.s!
Well run routes with sharp cuts could and should get more separation...

Need to beat press coverage...

He's not perfect, but I think he's done a good job of going through progressions, making it to the 2nd or 3rd guy and dumping into the flats to his RB this year. It was one of his biggest weaknesses last year, fueled by his fear of being crunched behind a weak line. But now that he's got reading time behind the line, I think he's doing better about locking onto a receiver. But yeah, Mond anticipating the pick and trying to fit a ball into a rubbed slant last night would've been begging for a pick 6 with that 10 foot target radius he showed off.

Usually Mond's throws to the sidelines are pretty scary (see the pick 6 to Bama), and usually rub routes involve throwing to the sideline. We've been doing a lot of good stuff with WR routes this year, lots of guys spreading out and crossing the field like Kingsbury did at Tech to fuel their passing game. In that Florida game, we sent Chapman deep A LOT and if their dreadlock safety came up to the box, Mond just threw the ball as far as he could, but if Chapman drew the safety, Mond looked underneath for Chase Lane and Wydermyer.

I like what the offense is doing. We just need Mond to keep the ball closer to the receivers' numbers than he did last night, and we need the receivers to help him out by reeling in a few more of those slightly unruly passes that they can get a sliding body or 2 extended hands on.

point being, and i've said this for years, that the hardest route to defend is a come-back when the CB's back is turned.

Almost every CB will have his back turned at some point when you are running a vertical route in man coverage.

When the receiver stops and comes back, he will almost ALWAYS have a huge advantage on the defender.

It's time we start using this a bit more.

Easiest way to beat man is take them deep, which we did last night, but weren't able to complete them, mainly because LSU took the gamble the refs wouldn't call DPI every single play, and they were right. Our WRs' issues catching the ball even when they were open didn't help.

There were times when a crossing route was wide open and Mond ignored it to force a pass into double coverage. That isn't on the receivers or the scheme, but his poor decision making. A slippery field didn't help issues.

People thinking our receivers can't get off man coverage haven't watched us play enough this season.

Mesh is an easy answer to man coverage, as is a wheel route, throwing to the TEs, or slants.

My only complaint about the scheme last night is I thought we could have run more slants. That said, we were in a tight game we were winning by running the ball and playing defense, and the first rule of winning a game is don't do things to lose the game. We played to win and we won. EOS.

Here's the problem... to avoid wasted plays, you have to have 2 routes for the receiver: the default comebackfor man coverage, and a cross through the seam in case it's a zone, which isn't hard on the receiver. But, and as a big Mond supporter, I'll say this, I don't know how much I trust Mond to make the right read as consistently as he has to and be on the same page as the WR for this to work. Maybe I'm underestimating him. He's finally looking comfy behind his trusty OL this year but a poor read on a play like that is a guaranteed INT.

Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, our offense this year is fast and simple. It's built on moving receivers that stay spread out and making choices where to throw depending on where safeties move.

Mike Leach killed the Ags' man-to-man coverage year after year after year with crossing routes.

At least we didn't run flood routes all night against LSU man coverage like we did when Kid Fantastic was our OC. Still so much pain.

LSU's horrible D was not due to bad talent in secondary and inability to cover, it was due to young/inexperienced secondary working as a team. That led to wide open, uncovered receivers in other games.

Unfortunately, we did NOT take advantage of that- running very simplistic straightforward routes- hence no separation from a confused secondary.

I wouild have loved to seen a lot more wheel routes, or TE delays on fake runs, a few short outs coupled with out and ups and general plays that involve misdirection and throwbacks.

I didnt see any creative pass plays- certainly nothing that looked liked it would confuse or fool a young secondary.

Agree and I think LSU simplified their coverage to straight man to put more emphasis on their athleticism which, against us, worked. I like to see the back run down the seems against this defense. That's usually the best matchup you can get. Achane was used this way against usc i believe for a tad.

We will see how good the LSU secondary is this week against Bama. I have a feeling they are not as good as we made them look.

Saw a segment on SEC Now yesterday and they showed several of our plays. There were plenty of open receivers but Mond either didn't throw to them, missed his target, or mostly just didn't hit them at the right time and allowed the d to recover

The best way to beat man defense is to have Mike Evans at WR and a QB who can get the ball in the correct zip code.

In man coverages, the defender is locked onto a receiver. Unlike a zone, where the defender has his eyes forward facing the qb. It was disappointing that Mond couldn't create more with his legs since the defense is at a disadvantage playing on wet turf.

Perhaps because LSU stacked the box and dared us to pass. Man coverage is a defense saying you will not beat us running the ball and daring you to beat them throwing. Auburn is going to do the same, and if we cant figure it out we may run out of luck.

The rain effected all passers, and Mond played terribly. Furthermore, bama WRs are significantly bettter than ours. It's an apples to oranges comparison.
