This may be the end of the golden era of college football.

A lot of the world power nations and empires grow an extreme addiction to competition and sports and entertainment before they go down. The greeks, the romans to name a couple. #we'renext

College Football isn't going anywhere. The NFL has a free development league at their disposal that generates a ton of interest for their players that they don't have to pay a dime for. The players association loves the '3 year wait period' after HS.

There are 70,000+ seat stadiums built all around the country because people want to go see their school play ball on their campus. No one is going to pack a stadium to go watch the XFL/AFL Dallas Renegades or Houston Roughnecks....

NIL is not going to be this huge financial windfall for players, it will for a select few (Tebow, JFF, Trevor Lawrence, Tua) that can sell/advertise via instagram, but for 95% of players they aren't going to make a dime off of it.

1994 - MLB strike...baseball is done, fans will never return.
2003-2005 - MLB PEDs...baseball is done, fans will never return.
2020 - COVID football...CFB is done, fans will never return.
Save pets. Vote Trump 2024.

Mike Gundy, who coaches at Oklahoma State and whose regrettable, if not sufficiently regretted, comments were featured in a recent post, is paid $5 million per year, and as the Sports Illustrated article on his comments points out, his teams have not had a .500 record in conference for several years.
While technically true (4-4 conference record in 2007), this makes me scratch my head and wonder what the point might be.

Choosing to read a pretentiously named blog virtually assures you'll be gobsmacked with dumb...

I'd be more worried about professional sports. High school and college might downsize ..worse case scenario

Not sure pro players will take a pay cut. Lol

TAMU will be fine after all this. We love our school.

Zero concerns about the viability of CFB. We will look back at this next season and will see it just as a blip on the radar...unless we win at all

Yeah this is a really dumb point. They were 5-4 in 2019, 6-3, in 2017, and 7-2 in 2016 and 2015. In fact he's had a .500+ record in conference 10 out of the last 12 years...

the "Sears" part is for the minor sports that finish in the red each year...and many times deep in the red.

there is no justification for them

Yup..... one of the issues is that so much money is being made now and the actual players, the actual talent on the field that has to go to the workouts, study hard, and play every Saturday... gets basically nothing. (save the speech on a "free" college education and how wonderful and great that is...)

Jimbo is paid $7.5 million to do his thing. I think it's been guaranteed over 10 years.

Forgive me when the TMF writes sob stories about slowing donations when I know Ags who are out of work right now. Jimbo and Rossy can afford to eat wherever they want tonight.

It's an interesting article with some very salient points. The one flaw in his logic is that most of the large industrials (like Bethlehem Steel or Sears) that went down through the years were replaced by other more efficient business models or better/cheaper alternatives. He could have gone further with an argument that another sport would become more popular, or that college football will eventually price itself out of the market. I can't see another sport replacing it at this point, but future generations may go more for soccer. I can see football pricing itself out of the market and just becoming too expensive for the average fan, but For now it seems that fans will pay a lot for something that only happens 6 or 7 times a year.

Did the NCAA give up control to a remote CEO who will completely lose touch with day-to-day operations in search of an ever higher share price and crash the entire thing into a bridge embankment?

That post is just some jack wad opinion. He gives no reason why fans will abandon the major programs, other than we will somehow come to some realization that we are a nfl minor league. Very poorly developed.

We have known for decades. We are proud of the athletes we send onto the nfl.

In another 30 years, America will probably be so neutered that football starts to go away. Thankfully we have several decades remaining.

The leadership across the nation in the NCAA, NFL, MBA, MLB etc is horrible and gutless. They have lost me forever. I saw it coming years ago and it is a sorry state especially for the colleges. The liberal leadership has hurt and damaged the academic as well as the athletic side. If all boils down to leadership and being truthful. TAMU and all the other schools will never recover.

CFB as we know it was doomed after the last re-alignment, and then the newest addition of paying players for the likeness.

It's just a slow death until the next big alignment, when there's essentially a super conference of 18-20teams per league in the SEC and B10. Which will be followed by an implosion and back to more of its regional grass roots of local teams playing or a separate league of paid players and true student athletes.

I can see college football pricing itself out of business. Superconferences of the P5 are on the way...all others will be reduced eventually to going back to actual non-scholarship students playing for the hell of it.
The colleges cannot sustain these programs forever at the non-P5 level.
It won't take long for the haves and have nots to be sorted out.
