Bowl games are no longer a good indicator of conference strength

With the trend of players opting out of bowl games to prepare for the draft, these bowls lose much of their legitimacy.

Need to hold the draft following conference championship games before bowl season.

Otherwise, early season OOC matchups are the only legitimate litmus tests of conference strength.

Op and the following comment are both true. This trend with players sitting out is only going up.

You people put too much emphasis on conference strength.

There are 5 conferences and the best teams from each conference will be as competitive as the next with a few outliers (SEC with Bama on the upside and the PAC on the downside).

Yes, some conferences will have more strength in the middle (SEC) and some will be weak (BDF).

And it really doesn't matter much. Just win the games you play. Recruiting will follow as well as championships.

A meaningless exhibition game isn't an indicator of conference strength? Next thing you know, you'll be telling us plants breathe in CO2 and breath out oxygen.

I disagree. Teams without depth will be hurt more than teams with depth overall.

It's also an easy fix. Universities and bowls should cover insurance for players who are going into the draft.

No one is arguing that point, but there are many players who are game-changing forces for their respective teams who choose to sit out.

When were the bowls legitimate? I always thought they were a joke...just curious your "years of legitimacy"?

The OP is correct. Also players today don't see the bowl games as the reward and challenge like they used to. The problem with the insurance to date is that it doesn't pay well enough for the kids that are projected in the early rounds of the draft.

None of this matters anymore. We have Jimbo. We don't need gimmicks. He can recruit without the SEC winning games. He has this y'all.

The big goal before the bcs/playoff was to win your conference and go to a big bowl. That's dead now.

Not really an easy fix. These insurance policies don't often pay enough to make people risk the potential loss of millions. It will help but it is not a fix.

This sounds logical, but insurance is not a panacea. The rule of thumb is that insurance companies will only insure for 60 of the expected draft position.

Plus, you have to worry about the insurer trying to get out of paying by claiming a pre-existing condition. This is not like car insurance where they want you as a customer for many years to come. The insurer has a vested interest in trying to deny coverage b/c they do not expect repeat business from the athlete.

Judging by bowl performance has always been sketchy. Coaches leaving, different motivations, etc.

Texags delivers

" can't wait for sugar bowl.. Georgia going in dry"
" SEC..SEC...SEC"
" awe look.. Texas scored"
" Georgia doesn't look interested"
" Georgia is trash"
" bowl games are not an indicator of Conference strength"

Lol

Don't know if Texas will hang on..but if Georgia wins or was winning now this board would be flooded with the " SEC SEC SEC " posts

But whatever your opinion is , have to give Texas credit
They are beating and have completely shut down the SEC leading rushing team and the overall 2nd best SEC team over the course of the last 2 years

I'm shocked that exhibition games designed to boost tourism to some community isn't a good indicator of conference strength.

Next someone will finally figure out that OOC wins against teams from the Group of 5 teams aren't worth counting since those teams aren't eligible for the playoffs.

With all of the meaningless bowls there is more of a chance that bowl games are not a good indicator of conference strength.

Players who are go to the NFL are opting to skip bowl games. Players may not want to go to meaningless bowl games which leads to poor preparation, the use of back up players, opting for surgeries early to start the rehab process sooner, game burnout, mentally not prepared to play then cashing it in early in a game if it is not going well......there are many factors that can affect how a team performs in a bowl game that is not important.

The spirit and historical uniqueness of each bowl has been completely lost. All of the bowls try to milk out every last cent only to have the bowl named some long awkward name. Therefore a real playoff system needs to be instituted. This would renew the enthusiasm into the first round of games. I love watching round one of the NCAA basketball playoffs.
